This review is from: Cheating Death, Stealing Life: The Eddie Guerrero Story (DVD)
The Eddie Guerrero story is a surprisingly well done documentary of a 17 year veteran who dealt with the demons on the outside, and more importantly, the demons on the inside. It goes on to tell how Eddie overdosed on drugs more than once, and when he got into a near fatal car accident, only to fight back and eventually win the wwe championship in a triumphant victory.
The documentary is touching and inspiring, not to mention it is willing to throw in several funny moments and jokes that his relatives share with us. This is a great story and should be viewed by anyone who wants to know what its like for a Mexican wrestler and the different styles that the lucha libre brings to the world. As for the extras, well, they are off the hook as well: Disk One: Hector, Chavo, and Mando Guerrero vs. Cactus Jack, and the Rock and Roll RPM's: Now when I say this match is old school, I mean it! Lets go back 16 years, to where even Mick Foley wasn't that well known and you have this decent six man tag team match. Eddie isn't in this, I think he is somewhere in his early teen years, but this is definately not bad of a match. Old School fans will enjoy this one. 7.5/10 Hair vs. Mask, Eddie Guerrero and Love Machine vs. Octagon and El Hijo Santo: This is another old match, 10 years ago, when masks and titles are on the line in this one. A back and forth battle, Eddie shows us how he wrestled when he was a rookie and how much he has changed nowadays. A good match. 8/10 2 out of 3 falls, Eddie Guerrero vs. Dean Malenko: Now this is probably the one match in ECW that was just the purest wrestling you will ever see. I think this was the last match these two would have in ECW. A great technical battle and should be viewed by rookie wrestlers who want a few tips. 9/10 Eddie Guerrero vs. Chris Jericho: Very cool to see Jericho when he was still in WCW. A good match, some intense submission holds and lots of mat wrestling. Jericho is great and so is eddie. But why was there another ring next to the one they were using? Leave it to WCW to make things confusing. Anyway still a good match. 7.5/10 WCW Crusierweight Championship, Eddie vs. Rey Mysterio: The only good thing about WCW was the fact that they had the best crusierweights in the world. Rey and Eddie put on a fantastic show that had Rey's famous mask against Eddie's belt. A back and forth battle that had both men show off their skills. Eddie almost even ripped the mask off during the match. A great match that wont be forgotten. 9.5/10 Other extras have five short segments of Eddie and Chavo goofing off and have good times with: A woman and her baby, an old lady who needs her pool "cleaned," two preppy guys and thier hot gal pals!, two guys on the golf course, and a unfortunate man who gives them his car because he thought they were valet boys! Plus three music videos; Finger Eleven-"One thing," Seether-"Gasoline," and Soil-"Redefine" DISK 2: Hair vs. Hair, Eddie vs. Chavo Jr: Now this was a very "interesting match" Chavo seemed to lose it at the end and starts to shave off his own hair and kept telling Eddie that they could be twins if he wanted. Yeah, kinda creepy. But anyway a funny match in some spots. 7.5/10 Ladder Match for the Intercontinental championship: Now this was a good ladder match between Eddie and RVD. Two ladders and a chair was used in this in some very hard hitting moves. Eddie powerbombed RVD off the ladder, RVd gave Eddie a kick which sent the chair into eddie's face. A scary moment though when Eddie fell off the ladder and almost fell on one of the legs on the floor, and when RVd lost his balance and fell as well. A great ladder match. 9/10 Triple Threat Match at Survivor series '02: A good triple threat match between the Guerreros, Benoit and Angle, and Mysterio and Edge. Second best match of that ppv that night. Eddie and Guerrero won the titles and thats where the whole LIE CHEAT STEAL motto started in my opinion. An excellent tag match, though slow in some spots. 8.5/10 US title tournament finals, Eddie vs. Benoit at Vengeance 03: A great technical battle that has Eddie up to his old tricks again. He stole and cheated his way to victory, but that is what we should expect nowadays, right? A good match. 8/10 Eddie vs. Lesnar, No Way Out 04: Finally, after five months of listening to Lesnar brag all the time, eddie finally dethrones the former youngest wwe champion ever! A match that showed the little guy can always pick up a victory if your not careful! Good match and the celebration afterwards was awsome! 10/10 The extras have: Eddie's mother has a heart attack! Confidential moments: YJ stinger commercial of eddie and the party he had. A behind the scenes shot of a low rider commercial, and several interviews with relatives. Plus a look at his match at WM 20 and how the Guerreros lie cheat steal thing got started. Finally, this is a DVd worth your money, lots of extras and some great matches, plus a great story equals a ten star DVd!

Eddie was one of those guys that people liked at times and didn't like at times. But I have to say that overall, fans of all ages all over the world loved Eddie Guerrero. He was one of those few that when you heard his music, you couldn't help but leap to your feet & chant, "Eddie, Eddie, Eddie!" In my opinion, "Cheating Death, Stealing Life" is a true testament to who Eddie Guerrero is. He was one who was always open with his problems (alcohol, addiction). He is a true inspiration to all those who have encountered those types of problems. Just when he thought it was all over for him, a guiding light shined through and pulled him out of his rut and propelled him straight to the top of the mountain. After 17 years of hard work & perseverance, Eddie Guerrero earned the moniker "WWE Champion"! And I know that he will always be a champion in everybody's hearts. My condolences go out to his wife, kids, family and to the WWE. Eddie Guerrero was a great man, will always be a great man and will be missed. Goodbye, Latino Heat. Viva La Raza!

You Will Be Missed By All Eddie,
This review is from: Cheating Death, Stealing Life: The Eddie Guerrero Story (DVD)
Just to hear the sad news that not only one of the greatest today or even ever had passed on, I was so shocked. He was one of those superstars that could make you love him or hate. Thats why he will go down as one of the greatest in ring performers that will ever have stepped into the squared circle. This dvd collection of his greatest matches and his life will go down in history as one of the best ever. As one of his best friends of Chris Benoit said that his life was one that needed to be told. I was glad that Eddie's life was able to be told from the good times to the bad and back to good as he was able to win the WWE title. Eddie will be missed by not just the WWE fans, but by every fan that sits down and loves to watch a great match. Which he had with every wrestler that he ever wrestled.
RIP Eddie We all hope to see you again

I speak for everyone when I say that today, November 13, 2005, is possibly the saddest day in WWE history. Eddie Guerrero, one of the greatest wrestlers in sports entertainment history, has passed away. At this time, I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the entire Guerrero family for this tragic loss. Eddie Guerrero will always be remembered for his lying, cheating, and stealing methods that always put a smile on the fans face. He was an amazing athlete and one of the best. Thank you Eddie, for giving myself and all who watched you something to remember forever.

You really can't say enough about the story of Eddie Guerrero. This DVD contains an awesome documentary that takes you on a trip through a life that fought demons and WON. A truly inspiring story that will hold your attention from beginning to end. Even non wrestling fans will have no choice but to respect and appreciate the life of Eddie Guerrero. Also included are matches that span his entire career from AAA to ECW to WCW to WWE. If you enjoyed Hard Knocks: The Chris Benoit Story, you are going to love Cheating Death, Stealing Life.

Eddie Guerrero, one of the greatest of all time, passed away this morning. He was found by his nephew Chavo after not answering a phone call in the morning. Shortly after Eddie's body was found, Chris Benoit, Rey Mysterio, Dean Malenko, and Chavo all paid their respects.....
I am so shocked and saddened by this, I just wanted to say thank you Eddie for the great matches in your career that I was fortunate enough to watch. I'll never forget the day you won the World title you deserved, or when the Lie Cheat Steal thing started. Please, everyone, buy this DVD so that you too can see just how much you should respect this man and what he managed to do for the sport that he loved. Eddie Guerrero 1967-2005 [You Will Be Missed]

Tale Of A Legend,
By
This review is from: Cheating Death, Stealing Life: The Eddie Guerrero Story (DVD)
This release came out over a year before Eddie's untimely passing. While a bit short for my tastes (just under an hour, it should've been as long as Chris Benoit's was), it was still very good.
"Cheating Death, Stealing Life" is a tale of Eddie Guerrero's beginnings in Mexico as a kid in a wrestling family, from meeting and marrying Vickie, to his wrestling career from Mexico's AAA, New Japan, ECW, WCW and WWE. It goes into his highs professionally to his lows personally. His fall from grace due to his addiction to drugs and alcohol, losing his job with WWE in 2001 and nearly losing his marriage and family. It is also a story about coming full circle and redemption as he got his life back together, ending with him winning the WWE Title from Brock Lesner in 2004 and being one of the main events at WrestleMania XX! I am not a real sentimental guy but I found myself shaking my head and nearly crying on some parts. Seeing the way Vickie loved him and the way Eddie knows he hurt her and many people with his problems made me sad but also happy that he did turn his life around. The parts showing himself and Chris Benoit also made me sad as well. Two very talented performers who ended life so very differently. Even though it seems now that Chris' actions may not have been entirely his fault, its still sad. Benoit DID say one true thing on here though, he said that "this is a story that needs to be told." I couldn't agree more. On a personal note, let me say this. IF Chris somehow is in heaven, I only hope Eddie is there to comfort him and his family that he killed because I feel that Eddie IS in heaven! Back to the DVD, there is only a small amount of matches BUT they do show how brilliant Eddie was in the ring. The other extras are very fun and good too. Eddie Guerrero, may you rest in peace! I suppose the four stars are a little misleading. Three of them are for the stellar matches featured on the DVD. Guerrero's always been one of my favorite performers. I only gave one star for the documentary, though.
I knew what I was getting, a 45-minute piece that was featured on UPN. People raved about it, but I figured it wasn't enough time to do justice to the man and his life story. Sadly, I was right. If they had even spent half as much time focusing on other aspects of Guerrero's life as they did on his childhood and his personal demons, the documentary could have been excellent. I was just left with too many questions. How successful was he in Mexico and in Japan? What was his relationship like with Art Barr and how did his death affect him? Why did he have a problem with Bischoff, and did WCW's demise have anything to do with him turning to drugs and booze? And on and on. Benoit and Mysterio's DVDs did a great overall job of introducing you to both the performer and the person. Guerrero's accomplished that in some ways, but not others. |
