5.0 out of 5 stars AIC can still bring the grunge!, August 18, 2009

"Check My Brain" is the second song to be released off of the forthcoming "Black Gives Way To Blue". It's a punchy mid-tempo rocker that highlights the rock-steady rhythm section of drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Inez. Once again, William DuVall manages to harmonize well with Jerry Cantrell, giving vocal depth to the track. It's a strong song and a good follow-up to first single, "A Looking In View".

As I stated in my review for "A Looking In View", the band is well aware of the void left by original vocalist Layne Staley, and to their credit they are not trying to replace Layne. They are moving forward as a band, playing off of the strengths that each member brings to the group. They've retained the trademark AIC sound and yet managed to build upon the foundation.

I can't wait for this whole album to drop. These guys sound re-energized and ready to rock. And make no mistake, gang, this IS Alice In Chains.

I know that a lot of folks want to begrudge this band for using the AIC name, but plenty of other bands have lost major players and continued on. AC/DC didn't give up the name when Bon Scott died. Metallica didn't stop being Metallica when Cliff Burton died. The Allman Brothers didn't quit when Duane died.......you get the idea. Why hold these guys to a higher standard?

This review is from: Check My Brain (MP3 Download)
I remember the day I first heard Alice in Chains on MTV in a video of their 1st realese. Blew me away. I went straight out and purchased their 1st CD. From then on I was hooked! I love this band. I was able to meet them all and buy them drinks at a Bar post them opening up for Ozzy Osbourne on His 1st tour with newly added guitarist Zakk Wild for whom I spent a few hours on his bus talking about how Ozzy treated his band and how gracous Ozzy and wife Sharon was. I first met Lane Staley at the Bar while Jerry Cantrell was on stage playing along with Zakk as they played "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynard Skynard. What a site to see. I looked over to my left and right beside me was Lane standing with a friend watching the guys on stage perform. I told him of how huge of a fan I was of him and of Alice In Chains and told him you guys are going to make it big time in a hurry! They did make it big very fast!
With Lane's passing away I thought and respected Jerry's decision of putting it on hold for quit some time. There is no replaceing Lan Staley. The new guy on this new Alice in Chains material does a pretty good job and I am now at piece with Lane's passing and so happy to hear the band once again. Thanks Jerry! We needed this new stuff. You guys still are one of the greatest bands out today!
Awaiting The LP's Release in Late September of 2009
Sincerely, Phil
