A Necessary Book, December 25, 2010
This review is from: Checking On Culture: An Aid to Building Story Background (Perfect Paperback)
Lee Killough's CHECKING ON CULTURE is a slim book but tightly packed with information and questions writers need to consider. It is distilled information and, so, potent. Like the very best teachers, Killough points to other sources as well as providing information up front, and she teaches by the best method -- asking. She does not provide a formula for making an alien or fantasy culture like a cookie-cutter product but gives the writers -- not only of fantasies and science fiction but westerns, historicals, and most other forms of fiction -- the information and asks the questions that allow the writer to have a deeper knowledge of what they are creating and how to make it more real to the reader. I'd learned quite a lot of this the hard way but, if you don't want to spend forty years learning the hard way, I urge you to get this book and use it.
