After hearing "Baller Blockin'" the soundtrack, I was interested to see how the next Cash Money CD was going to be like. People are already counting the days to their downfall, so I wanted to see what the Cash Money Millionaires were going to do next. "Checkmate" by B.G. is the first installment into what's next for Cash Money. His last CD, "Chopper City In The Ghetto" along with Juvenile's "400 Degreez" is what got Cash Money Records into the spotlight. Although, the baby gangsta still has the raw edge with his sound, Mannie Fresh's beats are structured differently this time. In my opinion, he's taking a big risk here because this is the first CD that hasn't followed the actual Cash Money sound that we are used to. The first single, "I Know" w/Lil Wayne, is no "Bling, Bling", but this song will satisfy the true Cash Money fan. B.G. still has the stories that we are use to as well. Songs like "Gun Slinger", "This N**** Die" and "Jungle" will remind you of the B.G. that we are accustomed to hearing. Other tracks worth hearing are "Change The World" w/The Hot Boys, "What's That Smell" w/Turk and "Hennessey and XTC" w/Big Tymers. Overall, this is a good CD. Diehard Cash Money fans may not like this CD as much as his last one because Mannie Fresh sounds like he is trying to be versatile with his beat selection. What I like about this release is that Cash Money Records isn't afraid to take a chance and be different. Many people believe that you should stick to the same formula and come out with the same material every go round but real artists are never afraid to take a chance. Also check out Lil Wayne's "Lights Out" and soon to be released CDs by Turk & The Hot Boys.

5.0 out of 5 stars B.G. = Brilliance by the numbers, April 9, 2002

Wow...can this fellow ever make the slightest mistake in any of his songs? To this very date, I just have to say no siree bob. This god of a musician tackles so so many issues, he reminds me of Bob Marley and John Lennon rolled into one amazing specimen. This album is no acception to the rule...The rule that you either listen to his albums and get blown away, or get out of the way. Better yet, if you can't stand the heat then get out of the kitchen. Not only will this album knock your socks off, it will help you put them back on and explain why it did it, in careful lyrical precision that is. Though all of the tracks will affect someone in one way or another the one that really tickles my funny bone is "Tyma talkin'". Can someone explain to me where this man got the incredible genius to write such a song? Not since Marley's "Redemption song" or Lennon's "Imagine" has their been such sheer magnificance in one track. Pick this up my friend, this will not dissapoint.

Cash Money rapper B.G. recently released his new album "Checkmate." On this album, B.G. shows a different style then on his last album "Chopper City In The Ghetto." I think "Chopper City In The Ghetto" was slightly better. I would give it 5 stars. It had a lot more creativity and much better beats. For the most part this album is good, but has a few minor set-backs. There are 20 songs on one album which is considered a lot, but only two of them are really good. The two tracks are "I know" and "Change The World."

"I Know" is the best song lyrically and it has the best beat among all the other tracks. "Change The World" featuring the Hot Boys and Big Tymers is the best all-around song. Also tracks 15 and 19 are ok. I really dislike the song "Press One." It's too boring and it puts you to sleep. The Big Tymers bring this album down. The skits are just plain stupid and I also think the song the Big Tymers feature in called "Hennessy & XTC" is a horrible song with a messed up chours. Before getting this album I would ckeck out Wayne's new album first. I can't wait until Turk's new one "YOUNG AND THUGGIN"

After his great 1999 album Chopper City in the Ghetto, B.G. comes out with his album Checkmate. With this album B.G. does what I believe his label mate (at the time) Juvenile did with Tha G-Code and capitalize on momentum from the previous album. As with every Cash Money album that dropped at the time, B.G. rhymed about the street life, mostly about guns and drugs. Every once in a while, he'll switch it up, but don't keep your hopes ups while listening to this album.

What plays a great part in this album (or on almost every Cash Money album back then) was Mannie Fresh's production. Most of the beats here will keep an interest of the listener. At the same time, B.G.'s rhymes do have some substance. With songs like "Gunslinger", "This ***** Die", and "Jungle", as well as a few more, revolving around the same subject matter. Times he does switch it up a bit here. The sort of conceious song "If I Can Change The World" featuring Juve, Lil Wayne, and The Big Timers, explains what they would do if they had control over the world (to this day I still believe that they could have done another verse seeing the pattern of when everone rhymed in that song). "Press One" is pretty good, sort of like a love song. "Get In Line" is great and features Juvenile and is one of my favorite tracks on this album. A young Lil Wayne would appear on the first single "I Know" as well as "You Know How We Do". The Big Tymers would also appear on "Hennesy & XTC" (was that a video by any chance?).

No doubt this is a great album. New commers of B.G. while he was on Cash Money should try to find Chopper City in the Ghetto. Both that as well as this album are out of print, which I wonder why, because these are his two most popular albums while he was on that record label. But if you find it at a reasonable price, add this to your collection. Peace!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dont king him just yet (3 and 1/2 stars), July 19, 2007
This review is from: Checkmate (Audio CD)
This album was BG's last album on Cash Money before he broke camp. Now you know when somebody leaves a label, they usually make a bad album before they leave(Think Project English). This album is not bad but it does have some suspect moments on it. Gunslinger is good and his team up with Lil Wayne on U Know How We Do was cool. What's That Smell with Turk is great even though that hook is hilarious. BG is not bad at telling stories and that is evidenced in This N**** Die and He Used 2 Be A Man(the deepest song he's made which talks about so-called tough guys who get tossed up by punks in prison). Change The World with The Hot Boys is an earnest attempt at a positive song and its also a highlight track. The fishy moments: his first single I Know with Lil Wayne was lukewarm even with the dope beat by Mannie Fresh. Hennesey & XTC with Big Tymers is trash enough to make people who do X quit immediately. Press One is boring. Bounce With Me has a tight beat but BG's rhymes on it were unenthusiatic. Problems is plain ol' weak and so is the kickoff track To My People. Get In Line with Juvenile is also suspect. The rest of the album is no problem and those Mannie Fresh skits were funny as hell(especially the first Tyma Talkin skit). Bottom Line: While Checkmate is not BG's best work(that would be Heart Of The Streetz Vol.1) its far from his worst work(undeniably Life After Cash Money is). It has good qualities as well as its fair share of bad qualities. All in all its still worth checking out. Standout Tracks: GUNSLINGER, U KNOW HOW WE DO, WHATS THAT SMELL, THIS N**** DIE, CHANGE THE WORLD, JUNGLE, RUN WITH MY CHOPPER, AH HA and HE USED 2 BE A MAN.

B.G. IS ONE OF THE MOST UNDER-RATED RAPPERS IN THE GAME. IF YOU ARE A HIP/HOP FAN INTERESTED IN THE MUSICAL SIDE OF RAP SONGS. YOU MUST LISTEN TO "YOU KNOW HOW WE DO" AND "CHANGE THE WORLD"!!! THIS IS TRULY MIND-BLOWING PRODUCTION BY THAT BRILLIANT MUSICIAN MANNIE FRESH.

B.G's new cd to me is better than the other cd he released, I like it when he raps about himself, which make it more better than rapping about some other rapper. example like tupac and biggie smalls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Checkmate! B.G. Has Captured The Hip-Hop Industry!, April 1, 2001

This review is from: Checkmate (Audio CD)
What can I say about "Checkmate", the recent album released by B.G.? 3 words. B.G.'s Best Music. With club-friendly tracks such as "Hennessy and XTC", action packed songs like "I Know", "Get In Line", and "What's That Smell", and just plain catchy tunes such as "U Know How We Do" and "Run With My Chopper", B.G. has once again made his mark on rap. I especially enjoy "Change The World". The song releases the thoughts of fellow Cash Money Millionaires members of how different the world would be if they were in charge. They leave a respectful image of themselves on the track and show all critics that hip-hop isn't just a sex ruled, murder happy, profanity filled genre. B.G. reveals his talent entirely on this album with his unique flow and uncanny lyrics. Manny Fresh does another incredible producing job and B.G.'s colleagues bring their spectacular material to the stage. "Checkmate" is the next album you will want to own!
