They're back and as good as ever, June 14, 2008
This review is from: Cheerleader (Audio CD)
The Canadian pop/rock band the Odds, who were popular on college radio stations in the 1990's, released 4 albums before Craig Northey left in 1999 to pursue a solo career. Northey, former fellow Odds band member Doug Elliott and Pat Steward and new member Murray Atkinson have joined together as The New Odds and "Cheerleader" is the first release under the new name.
The tracks on the CD are:
1) "Cloud Full of Rocks"
2) "Write It in Lightning"
3) "My Happy Place"
4) "Getting My Attention"
5) "Breakthrough"
6) "Out of Mind"
7) "I Feel Like this All The Time"
8) "Leaders Of The Undersea World"
9) "Jumper"
10) "I Can't Get You Off"
11) "Always Breaking Heart"
12) "River is Cried"
13) "Good Times Rolled Away"
14) "Come to LA"
Fans of the sitcom "Corner Gas" will recognize "My Happy Place", which was written by Craig Northey and is used during the show's closing credits. Northey also wrote the show's opening theme song "Not A Lot Going On" but it doesn't appear on "Cheerleader"; it was previously released on his "Northey Valenzuela" collaboration CD.
Overall the sound of "Cheerleader" is very similar to that of the Odds' previous albums: very melodic with guitar based hooks, and a bit of a 1970's retro pop sound to it. A lot of the songs are reminiscent of the smooth and catchy sound of the Odds' "Someone Who's Cool", while some of the other songs like "Leaders of the Undersea World" are more reminiscent of the differently sounding Odds hits "Heterosexual Man" and "Eat My Brain". The Odds sometimes get compared to the Barenaked Ladies for their sense of humor and their sound. Other bands the Odds/New Odds have been compared to include Crowded House, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and XTC.
If you are a fan of the Odds' lyrics you won't be disappointed as the sense of humor is as good as ever. The power pop sound is as good as ever too, and personally this is my favorite of all the Odds albums.
