3.0 out of 5 stars 3-1/2 stars -- VERY underrated
I remember my brother listing in one of his guides that Obie Trice was the most underrated rapper of last year, and I was like, "Ehhh, I don't know." But I listened to this album and now I understand where he's coming from.

I'm not sure how long Obie had worked on this album before it was released (he was in jail for a while back in 2002), but at any rate, he is a very...

Obie Trice's "Cheers," one of the year's most anticipated rap albums, is an actual cause for celebration. Like 50 Cent before him, Obie comes from the Shady/Aftermath camp. Unlike 50 Cent, Obie's humble beginnings started rapping with Eminem and D-12 when they were mere underground legends in Detriot. Like many debut albums these days, "Cheers" is loaded with production from big names and high-profile guest appearances. Some critics have said that the celebrity cameos blatantly point out Obie's lyrical weaknesses and shortcomings. While there is a bit of truth to that statement, it does not hold for most of the album. "Cheers" is a great album, production-wise and lyrically it is better than almost every rap debut out this year, including "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'," which, on the lyrical aspect, was kind of a weak album.
Out of the seventeen songs on the album, nine are produced by Eminem, whose beat-making skills keep improving immensely. His beats resemble his mentor Dr. Dre's with a little more pop or a little more dark piano. Dre does four of the songs and Timbaland, Fredwreck, Denaun Porter (Kon Artis of D-12), and newcomer Emile each do a song. The beats are excellent, from the club synthesizer "Got Some Teeth" to the pop bounce of "Hands On You" to the pounding keys of "S*** Hits The Fan" to the electro-blasts of "Bad B****."
Obie's lyrics do not disappoint either. Think of him as a Detroit Jay-Z, although less vocally accurate and not as clever or witty. However, he tears it up on songs like "Average Man," "Look In My Eyes," "Hands On You," "Oh!," and the posse cut "We All Die One Day" with Eminem, 50 Cent, and Lloyd Banks. Mr. Trice is dead-on with his angry but humorous lyrics and his sarcastic but in-your-face flow. He will be around for a while and Eminem should be proud: "Cheers" is everything a debut album should be and Shady/Aftermath can add one more classic to their record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive, February 29, 2004

I never heard of an album coming from Shady/Aftermath to be garbage, but in beginning, I was wondering whether this would be a good album, because I didn't like Obie Trice's first single "Got Some Teeth". But after giving this album a chance, I was very impressed. Obie Trice shows his lyrical skills on songs like "Average Man", "The Set Up", "Oh!", just to name a few. Although, the guest appearances on this album really outshine him. Eminem saves the song "Lady" and Dr.Dre's verse is way better on the song "S--- hits the fan". But nevertheless, Obie Trice keeps it real on this album, unlike so many these days, he doesn't waste his time talking about money and cars, but rather talks about his life experiences (check out songs like "oh!" feat. Busta Rhymes, "Look in my eyes" feat. Nate Dogg and "Don't Come Down"). But what really impressed me was the production on this album. Timbaland's beat for "Bad B----" was excellent, and Eminem did a really great song on producing most of the album (check out "Outro", "Lady" and "We all die one day"). And Dr.Dre's beats for "S--- hits the fan and "Oh!" just to name a few were amazing. Obie Trice and the Shady/Aftermath staff can all cheer for making a great album. Great to add to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slept on..., March 5, 2006

This album was slept on I swear. Obie Trice is an amazing lyricist. In addition to that, he had great production on the album from people like Timbaland, Dr. Dre, Eminem etc. There was only two songs I didn't like, and I found out because when I went to add songs from the CD to my Xbox, I added all but two, thats the most from any CD I have, 15 songs. Eminem makes some guest appearances, which is cool, but I thought that Dre making an appearance was even better, sick song (S*** Hits The Fan). I personally don't think that he released the right first single, Got Some Teeth. Yeah its okay but it doesn't justify what he is as an artist, he has more talent than he shows in that song. I definately recommend this "Cheers", you wont be disappointed.

Top 5 Songs:
1. Follow My Life
2. Average Man
3. Don't Come Down
4. S*** Hits The Fan (feat. Dr. Dre)
5. Oh! (feat. Busta Rhymes)

P.S. Be on the lookout for "Second Round's On Me", due for sometime during 2006, he promises it will be better than this. That's hard to top.

5.0 out of 5 stars The winner for 'Most slept on album' is..., December 26, 2005

Obie Trice with Cheers! To be honest when this album was released i didn't really know who Obie was apart from his verse on Love Me on the 8 Mile OST but being on Shady i decided to give him a try. And boy am i glad i did. This album is up there with the best. Maybe not lyrically but i guarantee that you will not skip a track on this album. Like on Eminems albums, Obie gives a little insight into his life with tracks like Follow My Life and Don't Come Down. it has some very good guests including Eminem (obviously), G-Unit (their verses are actually good believe it or not) on We All Die One Day and Busta does the hook on Oh!
A very underrated album from a detroit native with skillz.

Top 5:

Cheers
Don't Come Down
Oh!
Never Forget Ya
We All Die One Day

This cd is one of my favourites to ever come out of shady/aftermath/g-unit/interscope records ever, it is one of the few recent releases that has every single song on the album sounding great and I love it. Usually I would write my favourite songs but theres no point reall, cause if they were on other ppls albums they would all be stand outs but on this there all just great songs

The fact that Obie Trice sounds like no one else in the rap game is a definite advantage. Also, it's refreshing that he's not rapping about his cars or his jewelry. Obie is a hardcore rapper with a good sense of humor, which is a very unique combination. He doesn't try to be a gangsta or a pimp, he just does his own thing and the result is a great debut album. This album is 17 tracks (no skits) of really diverse songs with a lot of different styles. The production is outstanding thanks mostly to Eminem and Dr. Dre, along with a few great tracks from Emile and one of the sickest beats I've ever heard courtesy of Timbaland on "Bad B****". Almost every song is amazing, and the few that aren't are still pretty good. If you like Eminem & 50 Cent then you should love Obie, because he's kind of a cross between the two. This album is easily one of the best of 2003, and if you've liked what Shady Records has put out in the past then you should definitely cop this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Debut album, no gimmicks!, October 5, 2003
By
This review is from: Cheers (Audio CD)
Obie Trice first blew up onto the scene having said only a few words: "Obie Trice, real name no gimmicks" - He didn't even need to Rap and he was internationally known. However, almost a year and a half later, Mr. Trice gets his own chance to shine. From track one of this spectacular Shady release, Obie proves he's no superstar at heart, just an "Average Man" who can Rap (very well). "Got Some Teeth" - The albums debut single - Brings the party into the atmosphere, however elsewhere Obie is much more serious than most would suspect or be willing to give him credit for. On the song "Don't Come Down" he Raps to his mother about hard times getting better: "Everything's kosher with the boisterous O-ster/Lets get closer, so regrets never approach us". It's lines like that in which people get hooked on an MC. Guest appearances are plentyful; Nate Dogg makes very acceptable appearances on "The Set Up" and "Look In My Eyes", while G-Unit and Eminem join him on "We All Die One Day", as well as Dr. Dre on "S**T Hits The Fan" (an all powerful Ja Rule diss). Eminem also appears on "Lady" and "The Outro" - And he also assists Obie with the chorus to "Hands On You". Busta Rhymes also appears for the chorus of "Oh!" but does no actual Rapping which is for the better. The more we hear Obie, the more we're convinced he's a keeper. The production is top notch (Eminem does most, however Dr. Dre and Timbaland contribute as well as D12's Kon Artis). The only one thing that brings the album down, is "Spread Yo S**t" a song produced and featuring D12's Kon Artis. This is basically a filler track, there's no other way to put it. Everything else shines like the sun. Go Obie!

Verdict: G-Unit may be hot, but this album's no gimmick. Cop that disc!

This album is a must buy for any people who like rap/hip hop and even for people who don't. I could listen through this whole CD without skipping a track. I like every song. His beast and lyrics are great too. Even better than Get Rich or Die Tryin by 50cent. If you like Dr. Dre, Eminem, 50cent and all them, this album is for you. DO NOT MISS OUT ON THIS ALBUM.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long time coming..., September 25, 2003

Well after being teased on the D-12 album and having to sit through the 50 Cent b.s. we finally get Obie's debut album. My first reaction was that the production was awesome. The best on a debut album since Freeway. From there it was just all smiles. Obie has a unique voice and a great ability to tell stories. He makes you feel what he wants you to feel, be it anger, laughter or whatever. Of course people are going to want to compare this to 50's album but that's not a good comparison. 50 is all hype. He was a product of great publicity and club beats. But that doesn't make a good rap album. This album won't sell like 50's. It won't get airtime like it either. But trust me when I say it's musically a better album. If you buy it you won't regret it. It only left my car long enough to rip it to my computer so I could listen to it in the house.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant debut...deserves more respect., June 5, 2006
This review is from: Cheers (Audio CD)
Obie Trice's debut CD came out at a bad time. 2003 was the year of 50 Cent's "Get Rich or Die Tryin" on Aftermath Records, selling about 6 million copies. September 23, 2003 was the day that Outkast's "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" came out. Poor Obie, he never saw that kind of disappointment coming. It wasn't his day for a year that wasn't his...the only he had going for him from the get-go was the backing of Eminem/Dr. Dre and that may have lead to one of the most impressive debuts I've ever heard. I like this more than I like Doggystyle, if that is an indication of where I think Trice is heading.

He is a rapper that speaks in metaphors, the kind that arent entirely obviously the first time you hear them. Listen to "Lady", which features Eminem. Yes, it is true that Eminem slays him (who doesn't Eminem slay though...honestly) but the fact that he can even hold his own while maintaining a style all his own is commendable. He isn't an Eminem clone, nor is he a member of D12 (why do people tend to think that?)he is an "average man" doing great things with the little bit he has, and I think it's tremendous. All of those people who htink 50 Cent ca rhyme so well need to listen to Trice...he has the goods. And that isn't a comparison as much as it is a contrast: 50 Cent has gotten lazy, Obie Trice has only gotten more hungry. I hope his sophomore CD is as good, because I would hate to have to retract my ideals of this man's potential.
