5.0 out of 5 stars Regional soda from North Carolina

3.0 out of 5 stars Incorrect count
The soda deserves a 5/5 just for it's wonderful taste. I find myself ordering Cheerwine from time to time just to taste the soda of my childhood. The only reason that I am rating this product so low is because of the incorrect information on the Amazon page. You are paying for 2 12 packs, not 4. I was more than happy to pay the listed price, + shipping, for 48 cans, but...

Cheerwine is a regional soda from North Carolina, that has expanded into 12 other southeast states in the last 8 years. Started in 1917, Cheerwine was first formulated in the basement of L. D. Peeler's wholesale grocery store. Created during prohibition when it was common to name sodas after liquors. The owner added a new cherry flavor syrup to his previous soda and cheerwine was born. Believe it or his great grandsons still run the company.
The bergundy red soft drink has a nice mellow cherry flavor, and the color is really a pretty burgundy color, almost like wine. It is more subtle and seems less sweet on the palate than the grocery store house brands of cherry soda. No aftertaste or bite. There is also a diet version. They are also sold locally in bottles as well as the cans you see here. It is easy to see why the locals in North Carolina rave about this "Nectar of the Carolinas". Another hard to find drink from this company is "Cool Moon", a citrus flavored pop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Taste the North Carolina dew!, December 19, 2004

This review is from: Cheerwine Soda 2ct (Misc.)
Cheerwine soda has been a southern tradition since it was first introduced in Sailsbury, North Carolina in 1917. Like other southern sodas (e.g., Royal Crown), Cheerwine is a little sweeter and less heavily carbonated. Don't leave the lid off bottles of Cheerwine for long - it will go completely flat. The taste is mellow and unusual, not at all like cherry cola or cherry 7UP - more like cream soda with cherries added. I first tasted Cheerwine when I moved to North Carolina a few years ago; it was unlike any other soda I'd had before, and I buy it often now.

Today, Cheerwine is available throughout the South and serves as the perfect accompaniment to a humid summer day. The company even has a website with recipes, including a rather tasty-sounding BBQ sauce. If you're looking for a good old-fashioned taste of the South, try out this appealing soda.

5.0 out of 5 stars North Carolina Favorite, November 22, 2004
This review is from: Cheerwine Soda 2ct (Misc.)
I spent a few years living in North Carolina and still get cravings for this soda (not too mention the ice cream sold in a few super markets). This is not a cola at all. The color is pink and the flavor is all cherry. This does not taste like Cherry 7up or Ginger Ale, but fans of those sodas may well enjoy Cheerwine. Between Cheerwine and Royal Crown Cola, the classic taste of the south comes through.

3.0 out of 5 stars Love this stuff, but shipping $$$!!!! Really?, November 5, 2009
This review is from: Cheerwine Soda 2ct (Misc.)
In the age of UPS, FedEx, DHL, and USPS, it's beyond ridiculous that I should be charged more for the shipping on this than for the product. This stuff is great, but it seems like the company sending it to you is more interested in gouging you on shipping than anything else.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 Star beverage....., January 5, 2012

Cheerwine is a cherry flavored carbonated drink. The cherry flavor is light and not as powerful as one might expect. It's lack of intensity is the only reason I give it 3 stars. I am a full flavored, give me something to sink my teeth into, kind of drinker. However, despite my tendencies, I still purchase Cheerwine when lighter is what I am after. Extremely hot days, for example. Too much flavoring and sweetness can make me ill and Cheerwine is at its' best during those types of days. Being a North Carolina regional drink, it makes perfect sense. After all, hot balmy days can run from May through mid September there. For a spectacular combo, try Cheerwine with Red Velvet Cake for dessert. Now talk about cuisine, that combo is truly top notch. The tastes compliment each other in a way that produces a wonderful 6 star experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank God it's Being Shipped..., October 3, 2011
This review is from: Cheerwine Soda 2ct (Misc.)
We moved from NC to AZ a few years ago, and one of the biggest things my husband missed was his Cheerwine. I never looked to see if it could be shipped, because honestly, who ships soda? We were both really missing home today, on a whim, I went to the Cheerwine site. I think I'm still partially deaf from the hoopla that ensued when I saw that it could be delivered. People not from the south may not understand the draw of Cheerwine, but there is nothing else like it, and we've tried it all. It's not just cherry soda; it's how it's made, the taste of the water, the smells in the air that all flavor the ingredients in a way that can not be reproduced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily Addictive Cherry Soda, October 11, 2008
By
This review is from: Cheerwine Soda 2ct (Misc.)
My parents moved to Salisbury, NC when I was 9 years old. We noticed immediately the ubiquitous advertisements for Cheerwine everywhere, from billboards on the side of the interstate to almost ancient Cheerwine paintings on the sides of some of the older historic buildings in town. And if the locals weren't drinking sweet tea they had a Cheerwine in their hands. And at the age of 9, after my first bottle, I understood why. The stuff is *good*. It's addictively good.

Cheerwine is a deep red/burgundy color and will stain your carpet, so don't drop any. As to how to describe the taste, saying it's "Cherry flavored soda" is not quite adequate. It's more like liquid cherry candy. It is very sweet, probably a lot sweeter than most soda drinkers are used to, and finishes on your palate extremely well. I tend to think it goes well with almost any food but find it complements pork BBQ best. And if you manage to get your mitts on the glass bottle Cheerwine be prepared for a really exuisite taste treat as it's manufactured with real cane sugar in lieu of corn syrup, and the difference is noticeable.

If Cheerwine has any one drawback it's that the stuff goes flat very fast. If you pop open a can make sure to drink it within an hour's time because flat Cheerwine is pretty wretched stuff (in the same way that cold black coffee is). This is one of the reasons I almost never get the 2-liter bottle of the stuff unless I'm at a social gathering and it's guaranteed to go within a short amount of time. If you can find it, the Cheerwine ice cream (either homemade, a perennial favorite at church picnics, or the Cheerwine Company type you can buy at the store, also good) is also delicious. It's a unique soda that I cannot recommend highly enough.

Note: This review written with a 20 oz. ice cold Cheerwine by the keyboard. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Floavor I Grew Up With, April 3, 2010
This review is from: Cheerwine Soda 2ct (Misc.)
I grew up with Cheerwine, and there is truly nothing like it. I am not a big soda drinker, but when I do get a craving, Cheerwine is it. I like that the cherry taste is mellow and that the carbonation isn't at strong as other sodas. It isn't syrupy, either, the mix is just right. When I lived in FL I really missed it. The minute I would hit the NC border when I would visit home, I'd stop at the first convenience store and grab one. This is just an example of the loyalty this drink inspires. Once you have tried it, you'll be spoiled for anything else.
