Book Description

6 and up1 and up
Danny is tired of feeling different because he is lactose intolerant. After being teased by a classmate at lunch, Danny reacts by eating ice cream and drinking milk during a class party even though he knows he will have tummy troubles. With the help of the school nurse, Danny is able to teach others about lactose intolerance. Hold the Cheese Please! explains lactose intolerance to children between the ages of six through twelve years. The book contains an introduction to parents, a glossary, a list of non-dairy calcium rich foods and resources for more information. As Danny says, ...when you learn to accept things in your life they seem less scary... This book offers a great message for children dealing with bullying and being different due to lactose intolerance.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Dr. Frank Sileo has the gift of explaining a difficult, potentially serious condition in an easy-to-understand style that is rich with emotional insight. Both children and parents will enjoy this reading experience despite the often confusing subject matter of allergies and food intolerances. This is a wonderful tool for pediatricians, dietitians and educators to share with their younger patients --Stephanie Byers, MS, RD

Brilliantly written, Dr. Sileo not only provides an accurate description of living with lactose intolerance, but he also portrays the emotional and psychological struggles lactose intolerant children have to endure. --Andrew Ritter, President, LactoseIntolerant.org

Dr. Frank Sileo has done it again. Hold the Cheese Please! is an accessible, age-appropriate tool that parents, schools and health care providers will use to help children who are lactose intolerant understand their condition, and adjust to feeling different from other kids.... As is the case with Toilet Paper Flowers, Dr. Sileo and illustrator Martha Gradisher's collaboration has resulted in an impressively simple explanation of a complicated illness, told with sensitivity and an appreciation for the pediatric patient s point of view. --Jennifer C. Jaff, Esq., Executive Director Advocacy for Patients with Chronic Illness, Inc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!, November 9, 2009

This review is from: Hold the Cheese Please! A Story for Children About Lactose Intolerance (Paperback)
This book is excellent! I bought this book for my young son who is lactose intolerant. It is a great tool that anyone can use to help understand and explain lactose intolerance. The story is great and easy for a child to understand and stay interested in. The book also teaches a great lesson about bullying which I felt was a bonus feature. I would highly recommend this book to all school age children whether they are lactose intolerant or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for school and community children's library collections, May 18, 2009
This review is from: Hold the Cheese Please! A Story for Children About Lactose Intolerance (Paperback)
Hold the Cheese Please! A Story for Children About Lactose Intolerance is a softcover picturebook designed to educate young readers about lactose intolerance - whether they have it themselves, or a family member or friend has it. Simple color illustrations tell a story from a lactose intolerant boy's point of view. "'If you know these foods make you sick, why did you eat them?' 'I was being teased today at lunch by Alex for being lactose intolerant and I just wanted to get back at him.' 'It sounds like you hurt yourself, not Alex,' Nurse Lily said. I knew Nurse Lily was right." Nurse Lily teaches the boy's class about lactose intolerance - that it cannot be transmitted like a disease, and that it does not kill a person, but it means a person cannot consume foods with lactose such as milk, cheese, ice cream, and butter because they lack the enzyme that breaks lactose down. Charming color illustrations enhance this excellent and informative picturebook, highly recommended for school and community children's library collections.
