5.0 out of 5 stars Fine Set
This set has worked wonderfully for me since buying it 2 years ago. The knob on top of the pepper mill can be adjusted in order to make the peppercorns ground as fine as you like. When the peppercorns get refilled, just remember to tighten the knob on the top to your liking.

1.0 out of 5 stars what good is salt without pepper
I used this set for a couple of months before the little knob on the grinder fell off. Then the acrylic cracked. Overall a very low quality product. Invest in a good set, or buy this set every couple of months.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the money, but you get what you pay for, January 4, 2010

This set lasted me for two years. I loved it because I love my pepper coarse and uneven. Eventually, the arm on the peppermill broke and now I'm heartbroken. I'm willing to pay more, but there are too many expensive peppermills that don't deliver. For the money, this set can't be beat.

1.0 out of 5 stars Barely functional -- chunky, coarse-ground pepper at best, October 6, 2007

Getting a functional peppermill for basic home use should not be this difficult.

The mill itself is incapable of grinding the pepper at even a medium grade -- when it works, it produces extremely coarse pepper, with intermittent large chunks coming through. (Yes, I adjusted it, even using tools to further tighten to eliminate the variable of personal hand strength). The mill was also tested with various amounts of peppercorns inside (full, medium, almost empty) and by my husband, who is both stronger and more coordinated of hand--with the same results.

Moreover, the way the arm turns is jerky and uneven. This makes it very difficult to control the flow and amount of pepper being ground. This type of arm design simply does not work on a cheap, poorly designed unit.

The acrylic from which the units themselves are molded is quite cheap -- each of the four sides of the pepper mill had at least 1-2 bubble flaws in them.

The only problems with the salt shaker are the same inexpensively molded acrylic -- lots of flaws. But then, this is just a salt shaker, not a salt mill.

I imagine that the pepper mill might work as a salt mill or to grind herbs (as the other favorable reviews here use it for). But for pepper, it simply does not work, unless you want a very chunky, coarse grind, poorly controlled, with a device that seems likely to break very soon.

Caveat emptor: this item is $10, plus approximately $5 to ship -- to return it appropriately would be approximately $5 in shipping and insurance fees -- so there is no such thing as getting your money back via Amazon.

2.0 out of 5 stars not good pepper mill, November 16, 2002

I have this set for 2 years. The saltshaker has no problem, but 2 parts of the pepper mill, the part of the handle and the top screw, were broken under normal use after a few months. In addition, this pepper mill doesn't work well if you fill it with peppercorns. When peppercorns are full, it produces very little and very fine pepper grinds; however, it starts to make very big & rough pepper grinds when the amount of peppercorns is getting low. Even though these look very pretty, it was a very bad choice.
