When my mother was diagnosed with cancer almost two years ago, she received plenty of cautions regarding her diet. One of the most strenuous warnings concerned eating fresh produce. She can eat anything that is peeled with less worry, but anything else must be avoided or scrubbed well with a vegetable brush.

None of the women in my family used vegetable brushes when cooking, and I learned from them how to wash produce by hand. We were as thorough as possible, but a vegetable brush seems a good idea for anyone, not just people with weakened immune systems like my mother.

I bought a long-handled vegetable brush from my local grocery store and it did pretty well for a while. After a few months of use, however, the bristles began falling out. Since using the cheaper brush showed me that I really liked it, I decided to invest in a better one that wouldn't fall apart so easily.

I found the Chef'n PalmBrush at Amazon's website and was intrigued by the design. Rather than the long handle, this one fits in the palm of your hand and secures with a ring to slip over a finger. What I liked about this design is that you feel like you have more control over the brush with it in the palm of your hand. When this one wears out, I will definitely get another that fits the same way.

The bristles are firm, but not so much that the tear or bruise the produce. It feels much more durable than my old brush, and has done well in the dishwasher so far. Every time I use the vegetable brush, I wash it either by hand or by running it through the dishwasher to keep it sanitized.

I highly recommend a vegetable brush to anyone who cooks at home, and I especially recommend the Chef'n PalmBrush.

The bush part is very nice. It cleans vegetables very thoroughly. However I cannot use it in my palm. The finger hole is so small it only fits my pinky. If your ring finger is bigger than 7 you will probably find it squeezes too tightly. If you are a guy I would say forget this scrubber.

I received one of these for Christmas and have already used it multiple times. It fits nicely in the palm of my hand and the finger grip keeps it from slipping or needing to hold onto it so much. The bristles are short and stiff and don't smoosh down as you scrub. The bristles are also spaced far enough apart that cleaning the brush is quick.

I bought this and an OXO one at the same time. I find myself using the OXO instead of this one. It does a good job of cleaning but I don't like the finger slot. I find it uncomfortable.

The little finger grip is magic. You slip your middle finger through the ring, inner diameter first, so the brush sits in your palm. No scrunching your fingers and skinning your knuckles with this brush. I have been scrubbing beets for processing, a job that can take hours at a time if your beets did as well as mine did this year (we had to haul them up to the kitchen in a wheelbarrow), and my endurance for the job was markedly improved. I will be buying more of these, and hopefully I can get family members to pitch in, since they all eat.

I bought mine 5 years ago and I still use it every day. It's not as pretty as it was when I first bought it, and the bristles are a bit bent from scrubbing over the years, but it still cleans very well.

The one I bought was green with grey and about a dollar less. I notice now they have that one discontinued and have the green and white instead. Not sure if the quality has been downgraded or not.(I hope not!)

The ring part you slip your finger into makes gripping and control while scrubbing very easy. It also allows you to continue prepping your food without having to set it down each time since it doesn't leave your hand. And it's small enough to keep it on the edge of the sink without taking up a lot of room. I keep mine on the front corner of my dish matt.

I am going to buy a new one since mine is looking so old and tired. I won't toss my old one away since there is still quite a bit of life left in it. It will probably just get retired to the laundry room.

I thought I'd try this, it seemed like a good idea. The bristles are really stiff, and I prefer slightly softer bristles, I think they clean better in cracks of veggies. I'm used to a handle brush so having this one in my palm felt strange too. If you like a palm brush, this one is fine. The part that goes around the finger does seem like it would be tight for someone with large hands, although it expands to fit.
