For a REALLY big lot of garlic, I use my Ninja Food Master Prep. Otherwise for everyday cooking, depending on the size I need the garlic, I will either use a microplane which is fast and efficient, or a good sharp knife. I personally like to do chopping and prep work, so I didn't neccessarily need a "garlic gadget".
While this item works fine, it only does a couple cloves at a time, and seems like a total pain to scrap out over and over. If it was larger, it would make sense. It might be a nice accessory to have for someone who only likes a hint of gasrlic, but for the garlic lover, look elsewhere.
You must start with little movements- back and forth motions until you feel the gadget giving more and then you roll more, and then, all within a few seconds, you are rolling all over the counter and you have tiny chopped garlic. It saves me so much time rather than dicing cloves on my own.
And for the reviewers who say you need a knife to peel cloves of garlic- practice. I do it without even smashing then half the time, with my fingers, quite easily.
Cleaning it is easy. To get the chopped garlic out is a little tedious, but I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a fancier one, so I can deal with this. I turn it upside down, open the little slot and roll the wheel to get most of the garlic out. Then I open the entire thing, careful of the blade, and use my finger to scrape the rest of the garlic out. Then. I rinse the blade and the item. I don't soap it up and scrub it because there is no need, I'm only using this for garlic, and rinsing it under the tap gets rid of all the little excess pieces.
I think the people who rated this 1 star are not very patient, and probably not very willing or able to learn new things.
It works great. If you turn it upside down and tap it on the counter you don't waste any garlic. Not sure what peoples problem is with that. Pretty obvious solution.
