Easy to use steel for non experts,

So after reading the one other review of this product I felt compelled to defend this little gadget.A Sharpening steel of course doesn't actually sharpen a knife.Rather it realigns the steel to the proper angle.Traditional sharpening steels require you to hold your knife at an approximately 22% angle and stroke down the steel. Then alternating sides each time maintaining the exact same angle. How many non professional people can hold this exact angle? This gadget helps the non pro get a perfect steeling through the use of angled channels in the device.Simply put you cant screw it up.I would agree the steelpro is not built like a tank but then again I'm not using it as a hammer.I did take off one star for cosmetic reasons. As you draw the knife out of the steelpro it's quite easy to mar the finish.

My husband and I have been very happy with this sharpener, which we've used for more about a year now. If you've let your knives go and they're quite dull, this SteelPro is NOT what you need. Get your knives sharpened, and then use the SteelPro to keep them that way...that's how a sharpening steel is meant to be used. I do have a Chef's Choice power sharpening station. It's a good sharpener, but too noisy and too inconvenient to use frequently. We use the SteelPro almost every time we use a cooking knife; we keep it right next to the knife rack, and give each blade a few strokes on each side before cutting or chopping. Since we started doing this, the knives have been in daily use and have stayed sharp. We do take good care of our knives, using appropriate cutting surfaces and storing them on a magnetic bar so they don't get dinged.

This is a terrific steel, very foolproof. I use this regularly on my chef knife that gets constant use, and it dramatically reduces the time between sharpens. For the money this item is tough to beat.
I can't really understand why another reviewer would call this item dangerous, while the device itself is lightweight, with firm pressure applied with one hand while straightening the knife with the other, I can't imagine a much safer process. This tool also grips my kitchen counters just fine.

VERY NICE STEELING PRODUCT,

I bought this item on-line and received it today and, of course, had to rip open the package and try it right away. First, I used it on my "1 Star" Henckels 4" paring knife. After the recommended number of strokes, I looked at and felt the edge and was very impressed; it was just what I hoped for. I have had this knife for about a year, and it has never been sharpened, so I was very pleased that a "steeling" product worked so well on it. The knife had a really nice "bite" and cut cleanly into a piece of paper. However, my "2 star" Henckels French Chef's knife was just too far "gone" for the steel to work and I will have to have it professionally sharpened, as I don't own a whetstone.
I am a graduate of one of the best culinary schools in the country, and have great "knife skills" in general, but have never really been able to use a steel well. I think perhaps it is because of my height, 5'3" and the length of my arms making it hard to hold the knife and steel far enough away from my body to make it feel safe, and effective, at the same time. Hope that makes sense! Due to the number of times that I have had to have my Henckels French knife sharpened, I have become a recent convert to Cutco knives, and after much research, bought this instead of a knife sharpener because Cutco knives keep their edges for years and really just need to be steeled at home. (And no, I don't work for Cutco!) I am really looking forward to using this with my Cutco knives. Just as a previous reviewer, I only gave this a 4 star rating, because of its "cheesy" plastic housing; I realized after I bought it that there is a heavier steel model available for approximately $20 more. I probably should have bought that one, but this one is just fine for the price I paid. And, to iterate previous reviewers, this is NOT a knife sharpener, and will not produce the edge you want if your knife needs to be sharpened; however, it is a very easy to use and effective "steeling" product. Remember, a sharp knife is a safe knife!

As a rule I use a honing steel to rectify my knives, but I thought this product might simplify that task. Indeed it makes it simpler, but the results are not up to par, at least not in my case.

I always fall for these silly gadgets and was disappointed to put it mildly. I would rate it zero if I could. The 470 SteelPro is very light weight, doesn't adhere to a counter and dangerous to use--yes we read the instructions, but hate to say, this gimmick doesn't work. My husband, who always sharpens my knives, tried it too and he felt it was junk. Better off with our old-fashioned butchers knife sharpening steel. I will say that while using a butchers knife sharpening steel won't replace a professional sharpening job, it will lengthen intervals between sharpenings. This is the first time I ever left a negative response on Amazon but the truth needs to be told!
