3.0 out of 5 stars I like it, but...
The Chef's Choice 830B WafflePro Classic Belgian Waffle Maker makes soft waffles no matter how I adjust the heat control knob. I have tried a higher temperature, and I have tried putting the waffles on a wire cake rack, as the instructions suggest. The waffles still turn out soft on the outside instead of crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. Everything else about...

Like other reviewers, I looked carefully before choosing this waffle maker. While not the cheapest, I am very happy with it. It makes fantastic waffles, is super easy to use, and is very easy to clean. I was surprised when the instructions stated that you only need to oil the iron once (the first time you use it), and this has proven to be true. The iron needs minimal cleaning after use; in fact, the instructions state that you should not scrub the iron after use - just wipe off any excess batter and put it away. I think the oil in the batter stays on the iron, but am not sure.

There is a wide channel running alongside the iron that catches any spill-overs and sends them down toward the front of the machine, keeping the machine and my counter clean.

Others have pointed out the temperature adjustment feature on this machine, which is straightforward and eay to use. Other machines just had a slider that gave no indication of whether one position was hot, not hot, or whatnot. This one has a series of numbers as well as labels like "lighter" and "darker." Usually, I leave it on 4, but occasionally use 5 - it just depends on the recipe you're using and how crispy you like your waffles.

Speaking of crispy, the one distinct feature of this machine is that there is a switch that alters the way that the waffle is baked, depending on the type of waffle you are making. According to the instruction manual, the switch changes the recovery time of the waffle iron. So, if you are cooking a desert waffle that is crispy, you use the switch to slow down the recovery time so the waffle iron takes longer to get back up to temperature, which has the effect of baking the waffle evenly from the inside out. For a regular waffle, the iron will recover much faster, which browns the outside while leaving the inside moist - precisely the effect you want. In any case, a neat feature if you like crispy waffles.

Finally, you can roll up the cord underneath the machine and stand it on its end (notice that the back of the machine is flat). This takes up a lot less space in my cabinet.

Overall, I would highly recommend this waffle iron to anyone who wants to buy one that is easy to use and will give them years of use. I spent quite a bit of time looking for this in the hopes of being able to avoid repeating this exercise a year from now. I am confident that I will be using this machine for many years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars I read the reviews on all brands of belgian waffle makers, September 3, 2005

We have wanted a good belgian waffle and haven't been able to find one until now. I started by reading all the reviews on all brands of belgian waffle makers. I liked what Chef's Choice reviews said. I ordered it and haven't been sorry. We use it at least once a week. It's not very big, but it can put out the waffles fast. They come out just the way we like them, crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. I like it because you can control just how crisp you want it on the outside. I highly recommend this waffle maker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Waffles...Great Price, February 4, 2006

I've owned this waffle maker for over a year now and have given it as a gift. It heats up fast and provides a lot of flexibility in doneness. Easy to clean its non-stick surface. Like all similar machines, don't overfill with batter and the clean-up is minimal. It also stores well in a small space. I see that the newer model has a locking mechanism for storage. Nice, but not needed.

I use Carbon's malted waffle mix. I've never seen it in the stores, but you can order it from their website. It's the same mix used by Marriott's Residence Inn chain and comes in several flavors. Blueberry and Pumpkin are our favs, and the plain can be used as a base for your own creativity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great waffles FAST at a great price, September 15, 2007

This review is from: Chef's Choice 830B WafflePro Classic Belgian Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
We have 5 kids and we love waffles, but I have suffered through some cheap waffle makers and wasn't willing to do that again. Also, I wanted something that could make them fast, so I wasn't left standing at the counter while everyone else was eating.

I looked at the KitchenAid model that makes 2 at a time, and was really tempted, but $200 is just too much for a waffle maker for our family. And, it is huge to store.

I wanted something that was not too big to store, reasonable (for me that was $50 or less per iron) and worked fast. After reading reviews on the KitchenAid, the Waring Pro, the Hamilton Beach Flip and Fluff and this one (and probably a lot of others, too!), I decided that buying TWO of this one might do the trick, at half the cost of the KitchenAid. So I bought 2!!

They arrived yesterday, and I just pulled one of them out of the box to give it a try. We were able to make a delicious lunch in good time for all 5 children and myself, just using ONE of the waffle irons. I was impressed. We used the "moist interior" setting and it was delicious.

Cleanup is so easy. The manual recommends 1/2 cup batter per waffle, and if you stick with this, it practically never overflows. I brushed the plates (per manual instructions) with oil before beginning the first waffle and they all came off beautifully with my silicone spatula.

Now I'm wondering if I even need the 2nd one, since this one makes good waffles so fast. I think we will keep it, though, and have company on Sunday evenings for Waffle Night! I'll update my review for durability after we have had it for awhile.

UPDATE: I ended up selling the 2nd waffle iron to a friend, because 1 does a fine job of making waffles for our family of 7 people. There's a little waiting, but not much, and we're happy using just one, so my friend gets a good deal, too! She & her family are really enjoying it.

I bought this waffle maker at a kitchen store for $70, so Amazon's price looks pretty good. The unit heats up quickly and uniformly. The non-stick coating (probably this unit's best feature) works very well with many different batters. While the "quick" setting is fast, if you're like me, and want the waffle cooked through, you'll have to use the "deep" setting, which takes a good bit longer (it's still faster than the rate at which I consume waffles).

I used the machine once or twice per month. After 2 1/2 years, the "ready" beeper failed, though the LED kept working. At the 3 1/2 year mark, the unit broke down completely (no heat). If you look at the reviews for the previous model (search Amazon for "820B"), you'll find many complaints about thermostats and shorting. Still, it did a fine job while it lasted, and probably cost me in the neighborhood of 15 cents/waffle. I may break down and buy another one....

5.0 out of 5 stars great waffle maker, July 30, 2006
This review is from: Chef's Choice 830B WafflePro Classic Belgian Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
Cooks waffle fast and evenly. Has a beeper so when waffles are done it lets you know. Had cheap waffle makers before and had
to keep checking to see if the waffle was done and they took
a lot longer to cook. Love the Chef's Choice WafflePro, might be
a little more expensive, but well worth the money.

Everything else about the waffle iron is as advertised. The waffle iron is fast, easy to clean and and easy to store. I tried the recipe that came with the instructions, but I prefer the Bisquick waffle recipe. If you are happy with soft waffles, this waffle iron is the one for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Waffler!, November 4, 2006

This review is from: Chef's Choice 830B WafflePro Classic Belgian Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
I'm using this almost every day, for 4 people with very different tastes in waffles...and making everyone happy. I use commercial mixes (like Aunt Jemima, Bisquick, whatever's on sale), minus an egg, plus a bit of sugar and oil...and throw in blueberries, whatever...everyone here is VERY pleased. Easy to clean up, too.

I'm very picky when it comes to my appliances--and I got this at the recommendation of a friend with "upscale taste" who has been using the same or a similar model for a very long time (about a year or more?. I'll let you know if it lets me down....

I simply love this Chef's Choice waffle maker and think it can't be beat. It makes wonderful waffles, one after another, very quickly. The fact that it will stand up for storage is a great asset since it takes up little space. I have already gotten another one for a Christmas present. Love it, love it, love it!

I finally tossed our old waffle iron because the waffles always stuck! This Chef's Choice is excellent! You oil it once, before you use it the first time, and that's it! You can choose how dark or light you want them. No guessing when they're done; a bell rings and the green light goes on, and it's been perfect each time. The cord wraps around the bottom and it stores on end, making it easy to keep out of the way on my counter. I couldn't be happier with it.
