A Great Story for Children,
By A Customer
This review is from: Chelonia : Return of the Sea Turtle (Hardcover)
Chelonia: Return of the Sea Turtle is a valuable educational tool for children and a great read. I have been giving talks to kids in San Diego about sea turtles and Chelonia is a great way to wrap up my talks. Kids of all ages absolutely love this story of the rescue of an endangered sea turtle. If your children love the ocean and marine animals then you should get this beautiful story.

More Than Just Another Children's Book,
This review is from: Chelonia : Return of the Sea Turtle (Hardcover)
Chelonia has so much to offer beyond a fascinating children's story. Even adults will enjoy the beautiful illustrations, and the opportunity to learn more about sea turtles. Children's books should offer more than mere entertainment (which this has)- they should provide a process of discovery and education.
There's nothing more rewarding than seeing the wonder and surprise on a kids face as they turn the page...

This review is from: Chelonia : Return of the Sea Turtle (Hardcover)
This book is beautiful and I love the way the story is fiction, but there are lots of real turtle facts. Children will learn a lot about turtles in an enticing way. I have given many of these books to my friends' kids. I even keep one here for when we have children visiting. Keep writing.

Cute story of a rescued Chelonia mydas,

This review is from: Chelonia : Return of the Sea Turtle (Hardcover)
This is the story of a young green sea turtle, weary from fighting a storm, found and rescued by a young girl and her father. They place the sea turtle in a box, and continue boating home to San Diego, where a customs agent identifies the sea turtle as a green.
Why isn't the sea turtle confiscated and the father and daughter charged with possessing a protected species? Because this was in 1971, before the US Congress passed the Endangered Species Act in 1973. Sea turtles were fair game for anyone, fishers and tourists alike. "Chelonia" (as it was named) is raised in a salt water pond for a few years, and grows big. Finally, it is time to release Chelonia back to the wild. In the story, Chelonia completes the great circle of life, laying her own eggs in a nest she digs on a beach, perpetuating the species. This story, with great illustrations, is less a story of sea turtle biology and ecology, and more the story of a "rescue". I've read it is based on a true story. This book is also available in Spanish.

By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chelonia : Return of the Sea Turtle (Hardcover)
The beautifully drawn children's picturebook Chelonia: Return Of The Sea Turtle is the very highly recommended and collaborative work of Dawn E. Navarro, Robert E. Snodgrass, and Wallace J. Nichols. Based upon a true story, the exciting and informative text is enhanced with accurate illustrations of the birds, sea mammals, fish, crustaceans, and vegetation associated with the sea and form the habitat and world of the sea turtle. a series of "Sea Log" sidebars provide educative informational asides that are a perfect augmentation to the lively and engaging story of a little girl who rescues a sea turtle and eventually returns it to the sea.
