Go with these filters, do not get the unbleached (brown) ones,

If you have a Chemex coffee maker these are the filters to use. The bleached (white) filters are great.
DO NOT opt for the unbleached (brown) filters as they impart a VERY strong and unpleasant taste and smell of paper. Go with the bleached ones unless you like your coffee to taste like the paper towels you would find in a gas station bathroom (I'm serious, that's exactly what your coffee will taste like if you use the unbleached filters.)

I use these filters for my Chemex Coffee system. They are able to hold enough water and grinds at one time for about 4 persons and brew coffee in about 5 minutes from beginning to end. They do not shred and are easy to lift out of the conical top portion of the coffee maker without burning fingers. They fit perfectly into the coffee maker without the need for extra folding or trimming. My only problem is that I cannot find them at local coffee shops, so I can only purchase online. Not a problem, but that requires some planning ahead so as not to run out while waiting for delivery. Price is about right and these are about the best for brewing I can find, so they are my first choice for the present.

I've been using my chemex 10-cup for about 4 months, and I'm on my second box of these--I tried, actually, to find a different variety that would fit the 10-cup size, as coffee forums have been discussing folded/unfolded, bleached/unbleached. I can't compare these to any others but here are the things I've noticed so far:
1. They are, as advertised, much thicker than normal coffee filters. They hold up well to a hot-water rinse (recommended) and tend to maintain shape. 2. It is difficult to impossible to get a "perfect" fit by opening a square to fit in a cone, but I'm not sure this affects the ultimate direction of filtration of water through coffee through filter. 3. I don't notice any papery or chemically taste to the coffee, but I've never used them without rinsing, and I've never tasted the rinsewater (both discussed frequently on coffee forums). An aside: the chemex will reveal dramatically the difference in quality of beans. It will not make the pound of beans you bought at DD taste like a pound from a specialty shop. If you're not that discerning, or you have a type of coffee you regularly buy, it will make the best cup of that coffee you can get. I switched from a bodum french press, and the coffee took some getting used to. Many of the flavorful oils will get filtered out, and a different profile will come through in a pour-over cup. I can only describe it as "cleaner," as switching back to the french press (with top quality beans, even) produced a coffee that now tastes muddy and murky to me, and those flavorful oils now seem harsh. Once you've made the switch, you really won't want to go back.
