Now, I'm not one of them purist who say you gotta do this or you gotta do that, but I recently got back into using my Chemex and durin' my hippy-coffee-snob days, this was my choice. The rounded, white Chemex filters work fine, but these are the better choice. They also give you something to hold onto as you plop the dregs into the garbage or your compost bin...

1.0 out of 5 stars Unbleached filters impart unpleasant paper taste
I love my Chemex coffee maker but do not recommend the unbleached filters (the brown ones). They impart a VERY strong and unpleasant taste and smell of paper. I frankly don't understand why this product is getting such high ratings; the favor these impart truly is objectionable. You get no such flavor from bleached filters.

I'm a home roaster, too. The Chemex with these filters will bring all the beauty and/or ugliness of your beans and the roast straight into your nose and mouth.

Do it right or go to your local coffee shop, 'cause you're an addict who can't make good coffee, so you should have someone else make it for you.

Yeah.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chemex Unbleached Square Coffee Filter, January 11, 2007

Excellent Product at a reasonable price. The unbleached Chemex coffee filters provide a more pure coffee flavour without adding a chemical taste to the brew that using bleached filters brings. I only wish Chemex sold the unbleached filters in the 12" round unfolded style.

Coffee brewing is now a ritual: Boil water, grind beans, slowly pour water over the grinds. Takes a few minutes but the coffee is excellent. Still working on water pouring technique (Slow Down!) but I am getting more consistent. Regulare coffee filters do not work for the Chemex pot, even doubled-up!

I've used the unbleached filters as well as white filters in my Chemex. I find the unbleached filters yield a smoother cup of coffee (especially after pre-rinsing). I also prefer the uncut filters as they provide a "handle" when removing the filter to discard in the trash.

I've been using the Chemex system since my college days back in the 70's. Haven't had better, haven't had as good since. The filters are the key but they're hard to find and often out of stock. Buy extra.

These unbleached coffee filters are good because there is no dioxin in the filter to leach into your coffee and they are thick enough so that the rate of flow is just right.

4.0 out of 5 stars Large, brown filters, almost 'a must' for Chemex coffee makers, October 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Chemex Coffee Filters - 100 Chemex Bonded Unbleached Filter Squares FSU-100
I am using these filters with a Chemex Six Cup Glass Coffee Maker with Glass Handle - 6 Cup Coffee Maker and I am likely to order some more.

OPERATION

What you get is 100 12"x12" squares of brown, recycled paper, folded twice to make up 100 6"x6" square filters. You separate the 3rd and 4th layers of the folded square making a funnel and you place it on top of your Chemex - it fits all sizes. Then you put coffee and you pour water.

I was a little skeptical about the Chemex method but it happens to work well to the extent that you don't mind spending a few minutes making your coffee. These specific filters should be preferred over non-Chemex brands because, the makers claim, they are 'oxygen cleansed' and have absorbent special fibers for quality.

CLAIMS

The Chemex claim that the Chemex-bonded filters filter out ALL bitterness, sediment and oils are at least partly true. I received my Chemex coffee maker a few days before the filters came and I used it with less expensive, more generic filters. The coffee made with Chemex filters does appear to be less bitter. However, I can't say that ALL bitterness is gone. It's not but, like I stated already, I am likely to reorder these.

RATING

Overall, I like these filters for being large enough to make the potentially messy Chemex coffee-making process a generally clean one. I also believe that I detected 'less bitterness' (but definitely NOT zero bitterness) when making coffee using these filters but this may be my subjective assessment.

4 stars (I like it) seem to be the fair rating for this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chemex Coffee Filters, November 9, 2007
The Chemex system is elegant, simple and quick. It makes great coffee. The Chemex Filters are at the heart of the system. They are some 20% thicker than other drip filters, and leave no grounds behind. The coffee stays in the filter long enough to make a great cup of coffee. It's hard to find, except on line, but worth it.Chemex Pre Folded Circle Coffee Filter

If you like your coffee to taste like the paper towels you would find in a gas station bathroom (I'm serious, that's exactly what your coffee will taste like) then go with these. Otherwise go with the bleached (white) filters.

I tried triple, quadruple pre-rinsing the filters with hot water. This didn't work. I even tried a technique I know some coffee houses use of soaking batches of Chemex filters in multiple changes of water, then hang drying them. (This is nice because then you have a batch of filters ready to go, no thorough rinsing needed just before you brew.) None of this worked to remove the paper flavor.

Compared to other brands of unbleached filters, I suspect this is because of the unique nature of Chemex filters--they are made of heavier paper and are used in a multi-layered fashion. Another possibility is that Chemex has sourced unbleached filters from different manufacturers and this explains why some people don't experience this paper flavor. Just a guess...

Outstanding filters that leave no sediment in your cup. I have been using these filters every day with a classic Chemex drip coffee carafe for about 5 years now. The coffee can sit for over a day and there will still be no visible sediment on the bottom of the glass carafe. I prefer the square filters as the corners are used to handle the filter.
