Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9-12-- An informative and well-written presentation. Beginning with the recent specter of chemical warfare during the Persian Gulf War and the implication for battlefield tactics, Landau goes on to catalog the available chemical and biological weapons, delineating their effects, and describing when and how they were used. The one incongruous note is the lengthy entry outlining the lawsuit against the federal government over the controversial study of the effects of Agent Orange on Vietnam veterans. The rest is a straightforward, easily understood listing of these terrible weapons. The 1990 agreement between Presidents Bush and Gorbachev to destroy the vast bulk of both nations' stockpiles of chemical weapons is outlined, and the problems of verification are noted. Their destruction carries its own dangers, and these are faced, as are both sides of the moral issue of researching new strains of these weapons. With its difficult vocabulary and clear but dry writing style, this would be most used for research by older YAs. Other information is available, but much of it is technical and biased. A list of further readings and organizations concerned with peace and disarmament is appended. --Kathryn Havris, Mesa Pub . Lib . , AZ
