Book Description

August 28, 1998 0521639565 978-0521639569
Students taking their first chemical engineering course plunge into the "nuts and bolts" of mass and energy balances, often missing the broad view of what chemical engineers do. This innovative text offers a well-paced introduction to chemical engineering. The text helps students practice engineering. They are introduced to the fundamental steps in design and three methods of analysis: mathematical modeling, graphical methods, and dimensional analysis. In addition, students apply engineering skills, such as how to simplify calculations through assumptions and approximations; how to verify calculations, significant figures, spreadsheets, graphing (standard, semi-log and log-log); and how to use data maps. It also describes the chemical engineering profession. Students learn engineering skills by designing and analyzing chemical processes and process units in order to assess product quality, economics, safety, and environmental impact. This text will help students develop engineering skills early in their studies and encourage an informed decision of whether to study chemical engineering. Solutions manual available.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This innovative text offers a well-paced introduction to chemical engineering. Through a series of real-world examples and extensive exercises, students learn the basic engineering concepts of design and analysis." Engineering Designer

"Will [the book] really empower students to do things by themselves? That question was beautifully answered by the great collection of end-of-chapter problems. They are as valuable as the material in the chapters, if not more...The problems are very 'contemporary': they include a number of applications of chemical engineering to the microelectronics industry, for example." Eduardo D. Glandt, University of Pennsylvania

"The style and presentation of this textbook represents a convincingly refreshing approach to teaching fundamental concepts of chemical engineering to undergraduates...far superior to any material I have come across in other entry-level undergraduate textbooks." Durrants Press Cuttings

"The style and presentation of this textbook represents a convincingly refreshing approach to teaching fundamental concepts of chemical engineering to undergraduates...My favourite chapter of the book deals with transient processes...The authors' introduction of these highly relevant concepts is both informative and thorough; far superior to any material I have come across in other entry-level undergraduate textbooks." Chemistry in Britain

Book Description

The text has two main objectives: Students are introduced to the fundamental steps in design and three methods of analysis: mathematical modeling, graphical methods, and dimensional analysis. In addition, students apply engineering skills, such as how to simplify calculations through assumptions and approximations; how to verify calculations, significant figures, spreadsheets, graphing (standard, semi-log and log-log); and how to use data maps. Students learn engineering skills by designing and analyzing chemical processes and process units in order to assess product quality, economics, safety, and environmental impact. This text will help students develop engineering skills early in their studies and encourage an informed decision of whether to study chemical engineering. Solutions manual available.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction for the beginning student, October 4, 1998

This review is from: Chemical Engineering Design and Analysis: An Introduction (Cambridge Series in Chemical Engineering) (Paperback)
This book presents the concepts of chemical engineering at a basic level for a student at the introductory level. Topics are discussed logically and concisely with an appropriate level of detail to give the student a solid foundation for further study. This book assumes only a basic high school level math and chemistry education. As a first year college student, I found the book extremely helpful. It explained the material in a clear and straightforward manner. I recommend this book to any student interested in beginning a career in chemical engineering.
