Studying for the FE is an excellent idea. I did it while I was looking for a job right out of college. This book is the BEST way to do that. It's not 500 pages (a mere 100), it's concise, and if you work and understand every problem in this little book you're almost guaranteed to pass the exam. It is available new from the NCEES web site as well. I had no problems passing the exam. My study methodology was this: for two weeks, every day spend 5 hours reviewing by actually doing the problems. At the end, you will be very well off.
