Chemical process design involves the invention or synthesis of a process to transform raw materials into a desired product. Using a minimum of mathematics, this book offers chemical engineers a complete guide to selecting and connecting the steps for a well-designed process. Flowsheet synthesis, the choice of reactor and separator, distillation sequencing, and economic trade-offs are explored in detail.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...deserves a place on the library shelves of all universities, departments and companies, and of any practicing engineer involved in this wide-ranging field." (Institution of Chemical Engineers, 19th August 2005)

"...there is a need for a textbook that gives an overview of broad strategy as well as detailed design, and presents the concepts in an easily understood way that is also interesting and exciting for the process engineer. Professor Robin Smith's new book fulfils these aims admirably..." (Chemical Engineering Research & Design, Vol 83 (A9), September 2005) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

The Concept Chemical processing should form part of a sustainable industrial activity. For chemical processing, this means that processes should use raw materials as efficiently as is economic and practicable, both to prevent the production of waste that can be environmentally harmful and to preserve the reserves of raw materials as much as possible. Processes should use as little energy as economic and practicable, both to prevent the build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels and to preserve reserves of fossil fuels. Water must also be consumed in sustainable quantities. Aqueous and atmospheric emissions must not be environmentally harmful, and solid waste to landfill must be avoided. Finally, all aspects of chemical processing must feature good health and safety practice.

The Book is intended to be a textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students of chemical engineering, and to be a practical guide for practicing process designers and chemical engineers and applied chemists working in process development.

Chemical Process Design and Integration deals in detail with the design and integration of chemical processes, emphasizing the conceptual issues. Chemical process design requires the selection of a series of processing steps and their integration to form a complete manufacturing system. The text emphasizes both the design and selection of the steps as individual operations and their integration. The design of utility systems has been dealt with in the text so that the interactions between processes and the utility system and interactions between different processes through the utility system can be exploited to maximize the performance of the site as a whole. Chemical Process Design and Integration offers:

  • A combination of comprehensive textbook and practical guide
  • A wide range of process technologies
  • Details of the latest process integration design methods
  • Emphasizes sustainable process development
  • A practical guide to clean process technology
  • Comprehensive coverage of the design of energy and water systems
  • A guide to the inclusion of inherent safety in chemical process design
  • Large number of worked examples and class exercises

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, slightly ouf of date, April 14, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Chemical Process Design (Hardcover)
The book is very useful introduction into the field of pinch analysis by one of leading researchers in the field and covers everything that currently is standard practice in industry. It is not up to date with newer developments like the application of pinch technolgy to waste water management or to mass exchange networks and to the automatic generation of heat exchanger networks via mathematical programming.
