5.0 out of 5 stars Lovingly shot "mystery tour" of back alleys France, February 11, 2011
A TV show journalist hits the road on a personal mission in search of clues which may unravel the mystery behind her deceased grandfather's alleged betrayal of his country during the war and which her mother and grandmother refuse to discuss. Shot in modern France with the use of occasional flashbacks, the splendidly shot film is as much a hidden gateway into French culture and the landscapes of modern France, both rural and urban, as it is a trip into one family's past. The film breathes smooth elegance both in the manner in which it is shot, and through the many locations that it uses. Beyond the elegant scenery though, the story moves at a good pace, and manages to retain a lightness of tone in spite of its subject matter. It is a mystery of sorts. With the English subtitles on, and with only a few high school French classes toward my education in the language, I was surprised by how much I understood and came to understand within many of the dialogue scenarios. A decent film worth watching for those with an interest in either language/cultural aspects of France or for those simply wishing to see some of country's famed physical beauty. That the story interests and amuses is only part of the bargain. I love foreign movies that make me feel like I've almost been to the place it was shot.
