Book Description

Research activity in atmospheric chemistry has continued to accelerate in recent years, and there is now heightened public awareness of the environmental issues in which it plays a part. In clear, readable style, this important textbook looks at the new insights and interpretations afforded by recent advances, and places in context these exciting, dramatic, and sometimes worrisome developments. Like its highly successful predecessor, this new edition describes the principles of atmospheric chemistry and provides the necessary background for more detailed study. New developments are covered, including the startling discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole, and the rapid changes in the composition of the Earth's atmosphere, apparently a result of human activity. The exciting information gathered by the Voyager 2 mission, which gave us new insights into the atmospheres of planets other than our own, is also included. This text will prove a fascinating source of information for students of chemistry, physics, and environmental science, and will be of interest and value to readers approaching atmospheric chemistry from any scientific discipline.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'This edition retains all of the virtues of its predecessor, Wayne writes with authority and clarity. The end result is enjoyable to read and deserves to be a great success. Quite simply, I consider this to be the text of choice for undergraduate courses on atmospheric chemistry.' M.N.R. Ashfold, Faraday Transactions, Issue 21, 1991

'indispensable both for the non-specialist ... and as an introductory text for the chemistry student ... Dr. Wayne's text is readable and his explanations clear. This book will be a valuable source of reference for both atmospheric scientist and non-specialist.' J.D. Haigh, The Observatory (Vol.112, No.1106)

'This is undoubtedly a quality book for those seeking knowledge at a fundamental level, which deserves to sell well on an international basis.' R.M. Harrison, Education in Chemistry, January 1992

From reviews of the first edition ' This is a textbook out to instruct; but a textbook near to the frontiers, well written, interesting at a dozen different levels.' New Scientist

'Richard Wayne's excellent book will...occupy a prized place as a work of reference long after graduation.' Nature

'The central virtue of this book is that it is very clearly written, and in such a manner as to emphasize simple, physical interpretations of the observed chemical and physical state of the atmosphere. It is a real pleasure to read such a book, and in producing it Dr Wayne has done the community a valuable service ... an excellent book which demonstrates the value of lucid, simple physical insight combined with clear exposition. I highly recommend it.' A.F. Tuck, Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society

'While this book assembles the facts of element interactions in biological systems and provides a very clear illustration of the role of elements in biological processes and their central role in life processes ... should be essential reading matter to all who are concerned with the biology of thje elements.' The Science of the Total Environment, 128 (1993)

'In carrying out the revision, Richard P. Wayne has managed to keep the book excitingly close to the frontiers of atmospheric chemistry, His lively and instructive style makes the whole text a pleasure to read, and for the price of paperback copy it is an excellent buy.' Peter Warneck, Journal of Atmospheric Chemistry 16 (1993)

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid and engaging read, August 18, 2003

I read this book as part of a class I took on environmental chemistry. It is thorough and extensive in the subject matter it covers, and was not too difficult to read. Alas, I find the subject matter boring before reading this book, and left with my opinions unchanged.
