1.0 out of 5 stars Boned August 30, 2012
By Matt
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
For the sake of full disclosure, I'll admit I find the whole college textbook industry to be a scam that prays off of people seeking knowledge.
I digress.

This Cengage/OWL/Access code/eBook thing is especially a scam. If your instructor is planning on using the online learning bit for assignments and such then the student is forced to buy new. I bought used for 97 dollars, saved a few bucks (initially) but now I find out the access code is invalid. It had been used previously, but it said the book came with one. Now I can either:
a)buy the access code for 97 more dollars.
or
b) return the book and buy new
or
c) just buy the eBook/access code (which happens in options "a" and "b", also)

To buy the access code for this book, one must also buy the eBook, which is why it is $97. In all three cases the student is getting the shaft. In case "b" the good Amazon seller doesn't make money, either. In all three cases the publisher gets ahead. They already made money off the book I tried to buy, but that wasn't enough, I suppose.

They effectively ruined the used book market. Students, as well as the used book sellers, get the raw end of the deal.

If your instructor does NOT plan on using the online access, then everything is cool.

1.0 out of 5 stars Moneymaking publishing September 2, 2012
By Agreed
Format:Paperback
Well, I never really take the time to write a review, but in this case I had to make an exception. I completely agree with the other review on here; this really does put a damper on the student's budget to spend money on something that will in essence expire within a short period of time. Unfortunately the class I am taking requires the use of this book and it's access code, forcing me to pay over 200 bucks from the bookstore. Even for the ebook (electronic version of the book) is over priced. I mean, they don't have to print out the book, but they still jack the price up. Problem is if your a student, you don't have a choice and have to spend the money. Sorry everyone, we are all victims in this case ;/

1.0 out of 5 stars missing access card August 19, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The book states it comes with a printed access card for OWL with cengage. There was no card with the book. I am sending this rental book back and being forced to buy a new book with the card, costing me a lot more money. This to me is false advertising and Amazon should stop selling rental books or guarantee that the access card comes with the book. Customer no service said that because it is a used book there is no guarantee of an access card. This is not acceptable!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Was very disappointed with the seller! June 11, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
In the description , it stated that the book came with Printed Acess Card, when we received the book it did not contain the Printed Acess Card. This is the reason why we bought the book, if we had known it was not included, we would not have bought the book. I did contact the seller & the seller stated that he did mention the Printed Acess Card was not included & can only be used once, which it has already been used. I felt like we was miss led in buying this book. I was very disappointed with this seller, will not buy anything else from this seller.

The OWL access code is not included even though the title says it is. This is a scam and a waste of money.

1.0 out of 5 stars OWL Access code DOESN"T work! October 15, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I should have listened to the other reviews. While the book arrived promptly and still in the plastic, when I tried to use the access code it said it was used! I checked multiple times to make sure I had entered it correctly. Don't buy here, look elsewhere!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Order from Amazon Seller August 22, 2013
By Brett
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was very scared after reading previous reviews that my OWL access code would not work and I needed the access code for my class. I ordered it from the "Amazon" seller and the book was new and the access code worked. Very pleased with my order.
