Book Description

In the garden there are numerous interactions between plants, the soil and with other organisms in which chemistry plays a central mediating role. The aim of this book is to describe some aspects of the chemistry and chemical ecology which are found in the garden. The discussion concerns several of the chemically and ecologically interesting compounds that are produced by common ornamental garden plants and vegetables and by the predators that attack them. Well written and clearly explained, this book will make fascinating reading for the chemist with an interest in gardening as well as the gardener with a general interest in the scientific processes involved in the garden.

4.0 out of 5 stars Must Be A Garden Chemist, December 4, 2010

This review is from: Chemistry in the Garden (Issues in Environmental Scienc) (Paperback)
For such a slim volume, it is positively encyclopedic in some respects. The book is dense with diagrams and information, regarding chemicals in a variety of plants, formulae, and functions. A good beginning (but only that) for those looking for applications of chemistry / chemical compounds. It will give you ideas to for further research - for the book is weak on reactions, biosyntheses and such. None-the-less it does make for interesting reading due to its scope ... e.g.) chemical responsible for the odor of freshly cut grass, to pigments and much more). It is dense - but I've really enjoyed it.
