About the Author

Karen Timberlake is professor emeritus of chemistry at Los Angeles Valley College, where she taught chemistry for allied health and preparatory chemistry for 36 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Washington and her Master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Professor Timberlake has been writing chemistry textbooks for 30 years. During that time, her name has become associated with the strategic use of pedagogical tools that promote student success in chemistry and the application of chemistry to real-life situations. More than one million students have learned chemistry using texts, laboratory manuals, and study guides written by Karen Timberlake. In addition to Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Tenth Edition, she is also the author of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Structures of Life, Second Edition  and Basic Chemistry, Second Edition, along  with the accompanying Study Guide with Solutions for Selected Problems, Laboratory Manual, and Essentials Laboratory Manuall.

Professor Timberlake belongs to numerous science and educational organizations including the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). She was a Western Regional Winner of Excellence in College Chemistry Teaching Award given by the Chemical Manufacturers Association. In 2004, she received the McGuffey Award in Physical Sciences from the Text and Academic Authors Association, for her textbook Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Eighth Edition, which has demonstrated excellence over time. In 2006, she received the Textbook Excellence Award for the first edition of Basic Chemistry. She has participated in education grants for science teaching including the Los Angeles Collaborative for Teaching Excellence (LACTE) and a Title III grant at her college. She speaks at conferences and educational meetings on the use of student-centered teaching methods in chemistry to promote the learning success of students.

Her husband, Bill, is also a professor emeritus of chemistry and has contributed to writing this text. He taught preparatory and organic chemistry at Los Angeles Harbor College for 36 years.  When the Professors Timberlake are not writing textbooks, they relax by hiking, traveling, trying new restaurants, cooking, and playing tennis. The Timberlakes’ son, John, and daughter-in-law, Cindy, are involved in preparing materials for English language learners. Their grandson, Daniel, and granddaughter, Emily, don’t know what they want to be yet.

My comments actually refer to the 9th edition of this excellent text. I used that edition with my daughter during her senior year of home school high school. The writing is excellent, the figures are beautiful and right on target, the numerous problems at the end of each chapter thoroughly cover every topic, and the answers to the odd problems really help build confidence (and make grading easy). Professor Karen Timberlake includes her email and responds quickly, cheerfully, and helpfully. This book was excellent preparation for freshman chemistry and organic chemistry (the classes for majors) at the university.

I've not read every chemistry book out there so I'm no expert on how this book stacks up against the rest, but as someone who has had the misfortune to have to read this book and learn the material, I'm incredibly disappointed in the quality of the teaching in this book. The author has managed to cram random questions in everywhere, without managing to actually address the concept covered by her question. Due to overly full classes, I was forced to take this class online and this book just does not cut it. In every chapter, I've had to scour the internet to find an actual explanation of the concept Timberlake was attempting to cover and often find much shorter, easier to understand explanations as well as better ways to use formulas to gain the desired answer. The additional questions and challenge questions are overly redundant and many of the challenge questions are impossible without a higher level of knowledge on the topic. This is a ridiculous concept for teaching in an online class format and due to the number of topics covered, what teacher has time to cover these in class and still cover everything in the semester. It seems Timberlake put many of the questions/problems in this text to toot her own horn on the level of her knowledge, rather than write the text to actually teach and then question for understanding. I'm so annoyed by this text after 10 weeks of it that I'm actually taking the time to write this review.

Format is very helpful. The book is written from a purely introductory perspective that assumes no previous knowledge of chemistry. It is a great book for intro to chemistry. The format has practice questions after each section which enables the student to reinforce new concepts soon after their introduction. Answers are listed at the end of each chapter.
I recommend this book!

the description on the book says"if purchased new, access kit is included" but this book i purchased is new but there's no access kit. while reviewing other's comments regarding this matter, this doesn't happen once and the amazon management doesn't do anything about it about misleading a costumer on their product description. And also,i bought my books for$138.32 and two days later it went down to $124 I called the costumer service regarding price adjustment, there's no respond. I'm very, very, very disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!!

The book actually looks pretty good. But....

Do not buy the book from Amazon. I bought it new and from Amazon, not the marketplace bookstores.

Pearson a part of Prentice Hall will not include the code that you may need to get online and take the class. They want you to buy it seperate for $44.50 or go through your school bookstore. Amazon was awfull. Not only is it not listed that there will be no code. Customer Service only wants to return the book or give you $23. Maybe, I don't know since the form email is conflicting. Either that or I am to wait seven real days (not biz days) for the Amazon cust. rep to think about this situation. Of course class starts in 5 days and I am completely broke with my checking overdrawn. Sucks...I am now hearing stories about the same issue from other students. BEWARE OF AMAZON because they buy third party books and the Publishers do not want them in the biz. The losers are students.

Well, the book says on the cover flap that "[w]ith your purchase of a new copy ... you should have received a Student Access Kit ..." Mine was a new copy, but ... didn't come with the Student Access Kit. The publisher's website sells the kit for $40. I'm not paying $40 for something that should have been included, so I requested Amazon send a replacement, which they promptly obliged. However, this replacement also came with no kit. Sadly, I'm returning this one too.

I'm sure this is an excellent textbook but I'd get confirmation from Amazon that this logistical glitch has been fixed before purchasing from them.

I have gone through many years of chemistry as an undergraduate graduating with a bachelors and then went onto being post-bach student (pre-med at a prestigious public college). I have had a lot of textbooks, a few of which were this simple to follow. Yes, the material I went through was MUCH harder than anything in this textbook; if all textbooks were created in the same format as this one, there'd be very little confusion. I currently tutor at a college before I start PA school and the professor uses this textbook. This textbook makes this subject EXTREMELY easy. I don't know about the other reviews about online access, but outside that possible problem, this textbook is WORTH IT!
