Book Description

Please note this is a standalone book. Customer reviews may refer to a previous edition.

Known for its friendly writing style and real-world, health-related applications, Timberlake’s Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry was created specifically to help prepare you for a career in a health-related profession—such as nursing, dietetics, respiratory therapy, or  environmental and agricultural science. It assumes no prior knowledge of chemistry, and makes your course an engaging and positive experience by relating the structure and behavior of matter to its role in health and the environment. The Eleventh Edition introduces more problem-solving strategies, including new concept checks, more problem-solving guides, and more conceptual, challenge, and combined problems.

Karen Timberlake is Professor Emerita of chemistry at Los Angeles Valley College, where she taught chemistry for allied health and preparatory chemistry for 36 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Washington and her master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Professor Timberlake has been writing chemistry textbooks for 34 years. More than one million students have learned chemistry using texts, laboratory manuals, and study guides written by Karen Timberlake. In addition to Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Eleventh Edition, she is also the author of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry: Structures of Life, Third Edition, with its accompanying Study Guide and Selected Solutions Manual, and Basic Chemistry, Third Edition, with the accompanying Study Guide and Selected Solutions, Laboratory Manual, and Essentials Laboratory Manual.
Professor Timberlake belongs to numerous scientific and educational organizations including the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). In 1987, she was the Western Regional Winner of Excellence in College Chemistry Teaching Award given by the Chemical Manufacturers Association. In 2004, she received the McGuffey Award in Physical Sciences from the Textbook Authors Association for her textbook Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Eighth Edition, which has demonstrated excellence over time. In 2006, she received the Texty” Textbook Excellence Award from the Textbook Authors Association for the first edition of Basic Chemistry. She has participated in education grants for science teaching including the Los Angeles Collaborative for Teaching Excellence (LACTE) and a Title III grant at her college. She speaks at conferences and educational meetings on the use of student-centered teaching methods in chemistry to promote the learning success of students.

Her husband, William Timberlake, who has contributed to writing this text, is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Los Angeles Harbor College, where he taught preparatory and organic chemistry for 36 years. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University and his master’s degree in organic chemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles. When the Professors Timberlake are not writing textbooks, they relax by hiking, traveling, trying new restaurants, cooking, playing tennis, and taking care of their grandchildren.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now this how a textbook should be done March 2, 2013
Format:Hardcover
Let me first say that I've failed Chemistry twice and the third time managed to pass with a C-. It just isn't my cup of tea. When I got this textbook (from a different seller and not through Amazon) I figured I would hate it as much as I always did. I came into the subject with preconceived notions and the 'I just can't do it' attitude. So far my grade average is 97%, and I LOVE this book.
It's so well written, so simple to follow that I'd gone through the first chapter without even meaning to. It actually made Chemistry interesting to me which is a HUGE accomplishment. The vast amount of ways you can test yourself on the information is ridiculously helpful. You can't even get through a tenth of a chapter without a section that taps you on the shoulder to ask 'So, what have we learned?' At the end of each Section, there is a pile of 'Questions and Problems', then at the end of each chapter there are two additional ways to test yourself. 'Understanding the Concepts' does just what it says, it tests your understanding of the concepts covered in the chapter. Then you have an additional list of questions and problems. If you do every single problem and question you come across in every Chapter, by the end, you not only know the information but you understand it.
Love, love, love this book. Can't believe I've gone my whole life hating Chemistry only to now find out that it's pretty freaking awesome. This author knows her stuff when it comes to the different ways people learn.

3.0 out of 5 stars 10th EDITION IS THE SAME August 24, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The old edition, like almost all text books, is all but the same as the new version. I ordered the 10th edition and compared it to my lab partners book and it was all but word for word. And as a bonus the used 10th edition book I received had a un-used Mastering Chemisty code in the back that I could use to activate my web based work. I got the used one for $11 with Mastering Chemistry so I would consider this and save $150

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!!!! September 23, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Excellent book. Each concept is carefully explained on an introductory level, since it is an introductory text. What I mean is that the author does not weigh the book down with concepts that are not appropriate to an introductory level, yet it is not dumbed down, either. The text is clear and understandable, the illustrations are excellent, and I highly recommend this book.

The book was in good condition. I enjoy using it. It has been very helpful this semester. I'm glad I got it from Amazon, and the price was affordable. You can't beat that. This book also has a bunch of useful information, and it's fairly well at explaining how to work out the different types of problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chemistry by Timberlake July 19, 2011
By Lucky
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book provides a lot of sample problems step by step examples, problems and questions and answers at the end of each chapter to help you understand the material. Whats great about this book to is that if you miss a lecture your able to go into this book and review material that you have missed and easily teach yourself the material. The only issues with this book is that there are a few questions that have unaccurate answers and definitions. Other than that its really explanitory. I will recommend this book to any student who will be taking chemistry! Amazing book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like New January 6, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I don't order textbooks online often; actually I recently just started ordering online. I didn't know a used textbook could look so new and I got the access code with it unopened. That was amazing. The price was great considering I would be spending a ton buying it on campus.

4.0 out of 5 stars I have never taken a chemistry class before June 15, 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have never taken a class in chemistry before, so this purchase seem to be a lot easier than what I have been hearing about chemistry.

1.0 out of 5 stars bootleg copy? April 27, 2014
By Lynda
Format:Loose Leaf|Verified Purchase
I was very dissapointed with this loose page copy version of the text. It was in black and white, not color like the text. I requested my money back, but have yet to receive it. Needless to say, I failed the class
