Book Description

January 15, 2010 0321651782 978-0321651785 2
This innovative text explains difficult concepts in a relevant, student-oriented manner.  Chemistry is presented visually through multi-level images—macroscopic, molecular and symbolic representations—helping you see the connections among the formulas (symbolic), the world around you (macroscopic), and the atoms and molecules that make up the world (molecular). Among other revisions, the Second Edition offers a crisp new design, adds more challenging problems, and significantly revises coverage of electrochemistry.

About the Author

Nivaldo Tro is Professor of Chemistry at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he has been a faculty member since 1990.   He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum.   He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did post-doctoral research on ultra-fast reaction dynamics in solution.  Since coming to Westmont, Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, from Research Corporation, and from the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin adlayer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces.   He has twice been honored as Westmont's outstanding teacher of the year and has also received the college's outstanding researcher of the year award.   Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Ali, Kyle, and Kaden.  In his leisure time, Professor Tro enjoys reading good literature to his children and being outdoors with his family.

1.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced, frustrating, and lacking enough examples, February 12, 2012
This review is from: Chemistry: A Molecular Approach (2nd US Edition) (Hardcover)
The explanation for each example is just not good enough. In many cases the algebra is left out of the examples and author assumes that you are able to follow along. For me however, It would have been very helpful had they shown the algebra too. The number of example problems is low and the problems that do exist are extremely basic. They are too simple to prepare you for the homework problems in masteringchemisty. It also seems that each university releases its own version of this book so that you cannot borrow a friends. The online homework access code is overpriced if purchased alone(60 dollars) and this also reduces the used textbook value. Despite each university having a unique version of the book, I found that the University of Maryland does not teach even half of the chapters found in the text. If you're going to require students to buy a version that is specific to your university, at least go to the trouble of making that version match the class you offer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor textbook, January 27, 2012
This review is from: Chemistry: A Molecular Approach (2nd US Edition) (Hardcover)
After getting about halfway through this textbook, I've decided that it's not very good. The example problems in the text are very basic, and the explanations of complicated processes are weak. We are given VERY simple example problems in the text and complicated cumulative problems for homework.

Chapters 12 and 13 are particularly bad. I've never felt so lost in a class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, September 14, 2011
This review is from: Chemistry: A Molecular Approach (2nd US Edition) (Hardcover)
This textbook is excellent and well written. It presents topics clearly and concisely. I recommend those who have not had previousexperience in Chemistry to buy this textbook, even if it's not required for your chemistry class.
