While I would hesitate to recommend this to someone who had never taken high school chemistry, as a second year high school book and a science majors' level college text, this book is fantastic. Comparing it to an old version of Brady & Humiston, and Zumdahl's Introductory Chemistry, Silberberg wins hands down. Fantastic layout and detailed explanations of most topics. Not good for the most basic topics (don't even think about learning oxidation-reduction reaction balancing from this text).

This is the book used for General Chemistry at the University of Florida. This book was occasionally helpful with equations and broad topics, but didn't go into enough detail on some subjects, especially in the Acid/Base chapters. Otherwise it's a decent reference.

Its a savior for a student taking chemistry for the first time. Literature makes concepts very easy and the grafix are unique and the best I have seen. I am an I.B. student and I think that for a high school chemistry course, this is a wonderful friendly resource.

I know for a fact that majors colleges are using this book for Chemistry 142-162. I myself am a High School student taking AP Chemistry. I found the book better to be the one assigned to me by my High School and I often use it when things are not clear. This book is excellent.

I bought this to get a more in depth intro to chemistry after buying one of the quick reference books. It was just what I needed. (I went for a previous edition to save money and it has plenty of what I need. The basics aren't going to change that much.) I enjoy the clear explanations and the graphics are very helpful. More than enough problems to keep me busy if I were to do them all. It gives nice historical background and covers all the major topics.

THIS IS THE BEST CHEMISTRY BOOK I'VE EVER USED. THE GRAPHICS ARE AMAZING AND THE LAYOUT IS SOMETHING ELSE. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ALL OF YOU TAKING A COLLEGE-LEVEL GENERAL CHEMISTRY COURSE. THOUGH AT TIMES THE MATERIAL CAN BE A BIT DIFFICULT TO FOLLOW DUE TO ALL THE FLASHY GRAPHICS. BUT OVERALL, THIS IS A VERY GOOD CHEMISTRY BOOK. HATS OFF TO MR. SILBERBERG. YOU DEFINITELY GET AN A FOR THIS BOOK. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

This book is completely worthless. It only provides the answers to the questions that already have answers in the back of the book. Don't waste your money, there's nothing worthwhile in this book.

Don't waste you money! I bought this book thinking it would help me with my chemistry class. I hoped it would add extra problems for me to work and help when I was studying, doing the calculations outside the classroom. The only thing it helped was the publisher's profit margin. This book is all but useless. About the only thing it's good for is adding weight to your backpack. It gives you no more information than what's in the back of the book. The only problems worked in the book are the ones with answers in the back of the book. There is really nothing extra. No explanations on how the problems were worked out, no detail in the calculations, no extra examples or problems for practice. Nothing is described or shown in any detail whatsoever. All that's there is the answer and a small portion from the end of the calculation. No explanation as to how the problems are worked or how they arrived at the answer. To top it all off, it was written by grad students and some of the calculations are wrong. After reviewing it, my professor even said it was a waste of money and doesn't recommend buying it. You'd be better off buying the STUDY GUIDE that goes with the text instead of the solutions manual. Again, don't waste your money on this book!

The solutions offered are mediocre at best and are only offered for the problems where the answer is already given in the back of the book. Honestly, do not buy this book unless you want to spend $40 for pure frustration and eventual fire kindling.
