4.0 out of 5 stars Good But Not Great, December 11, 2006
By
This review is from: Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide (Paperback)
With the proliferation of online dating sites there is a huge demand for online dating books, and there are plenty out there. Most just deal with online dating in general, how to get the most out of it, what the benefits are, etc. Steve Monas' book "Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide" is unique. It highlights the most popular dating sites online and gives a short review of each then a how-to on how to set up a profile.

One of the most useful parts of the book is the section at the beginning that offers some help for people interested in online dating. The help includes a short piece written by someone by the name of "Sabrine H.," who talks about why anyone would want to set up an online dating profile. There is also an introduction by the author and tips for online dating and for choosing a photo as well as some tips for online dating safety.

The screenshots for each of the web sites featured is helpful and the author also includes a little history of each site, what the best feature of each site is, what complaints users of the site have and even the web address for the web site's wikipedia entry.

The book's main focus is on the positives and negatives of the most popular dating sites online and a how-to set up a profile. There is also a site summary at the back of the book that tells you the cost of joining, how many photos each site allows, the sites' membership, URLs and when they were started. Another supplement lists some niche dating sites that is useful.
[...]

I was also disappointed to find that there weren't more race-based sites listed. There was an African-American dating site listed, but there weren't any Asian, Desi, Hispanic or other race-based niche sites on the list. However, all of the web sites listed cater to anyone of any race.

If you're looking for a dating web site to join, I'd recommend this book to help you choose which one(s).

4.0 out of 5 stars Chemistry and Numbers Gives You Something to Think About..., December 14, 2006
This review is from: Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide (Paperback)
Before Chemistry and Numbers I considered internet dating completely off limits. Too much of a risk, not secure enough, too many odd balls out there...etc. However, Chemistry and Numbers does a good job of presenting internet dating as a positive means of meeting people in a very mobile and busy society.

Given that many of our traditional ways of meeting people, you know the "guy next door falls in love with girl next door or high school sweet hearts marry at 19" type scenarios, are less frequent, Chemistry and Numbers suggests a way that fits right in with our computer/IM/email society. One comment in the book really had me thinking; will internet dating be as common place for dating as the card catalogue is when you select a book in the library? Something to think about...

Chemistry and Numbers step by step approach to some of the most popular sites is easy to understand, even for those of us who are not computer savvy. It also gives you some great decision making information such as cost involved, positive and negative aspects of the site, and the number of pictures you can post. Chemistry and Numbers is very helpful in narrowing down what site you want to go with.

Not sure if I will venture out there; I am too much of a traditionalist. Chemistry and Numbers really helped to enlighten me to internet dating. I may promote it more with my students who are a bit younger and more daring.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good basic guide to online dating services, December 11, 2006
This review is from: Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide (Paperback)
Having gotten my feet wet trying a couple of online dating sites a few years ago, Steve Monas' book "Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide" gave me one big surprise right in the table of contents. I had no idea there were now so many online dating services. Monas has done all of the leg work here and has compiled information on all of the ones you've heard of, and on many that you probably haven't.

There are sections devoted to each site he's reviewed, including screenshots that take you through the registration process. While I like to consider myself fairly net savvy and felt that giving that much visual instruction was unnecessary, I imagine many people would find it a big plus, particularly those who've never registered for a dating site before and don't know what to expect.

I think one of the most useful features in the book is the information about how the sites match up members, telling which ones use detailed questionnaires and/or personality testing and which ones let you go in and sort out the wheat from the chaff for yourself. Thanks to Monas, if I ever have the need to try online dating again I now know exactly which sites I'd be interested in and which ones I will stay very far away from.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Start to Online Dating, December 14, 2006

This review is from: Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide (Paperback)
What a great book. I've been thinking about online dating but have been afraid to take the plunge. There are just so many services to choose from. I am constantly getting emails of services to try and I just don't know which one to choose. Steve Monas, "Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide", is just the book I've been looking for.

It not only gave me information on the different online dating services, it also covered how to sign up on the website, what photo's of myself I should use, and useful tips for each site. I also liked the safety tips he provided for online dating.

"Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide", has given me the information I needed to get rolling in the online dating scene. I loved the book and would highly recommend it to anyone just getting started in online dating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Online Dating guide..., December 12, 2006
By
John Coutts (Shetland, Scotland.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide (Paperback)
Steve Monas has come up with one of the finest online dating guides I have ever seen in this offering. It has an extremely comprehensive overview of all (most at least) of the online dating sites. He takes you step by step through the registration process with screenshots - impressive for any newcomer, or old hand even...

Online dating has become big business. Perhaps the main reason can be summed up in a quote from Steve's book: "You meet people online that you normally don't meet on the streets." And it's safe too, when you know what you're doing. And if you don't know what you're doing, get Steve Monas' book! It doesn't have an abundance of text - mainly "how to" screenshots. But I feel that definitely adds to this book's charm.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Find, December 11, 2006
This review is from: Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide (Paperback)
Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide is a breath of fresh air! With some of the other online dating guides I've read, I wanted to fall asleep before I even got off the first page.

Chemistry and Numbers helped me see the benefits that do exist in online dating. Although I'd always worried about the safety of online dating, Chemistry and Numbers gave me some very practical and useful tips for having a great time while staying safe.

In addition to safety tips, I also found the information on various online dating agencies to be very helpful. This part of the book helped me figure out which agnecy would likely help me the most. Since everybody is different, I needed some clarification on which agency would give me the best shot at finding a date online.

I would absolutely recommend this book to someone who is interested in finding an online dating service or even striking out on your own. You will find tons of valuable information to help you get started on the right foot.

This review is from: Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide (Paperback)
Chemistry and Numbers " The Online Dating Guide" was a joy to read, it talks about why a person would create an online dating profile to begin with. Pointing out the significance as being networking opportunities. This is not only an interesting factor, but very true. Online Dating sites give you the opportunity to meet people that you otherwise would not have any access to meeting. Chemistry and Numbers also includes a lot of information about the online dating scene.

The Online Dating Guide explains about picking and choosing criteria, along with the choice of certain characteristics that you are looking for. Chemistry and Numbers closes the book with names of Online Dating websites, and explains about each one giving you quick facts, which are good for those people who are interested in online dating but are not sure where to begin, so you can choose which site you would like to join.

One of my favorite parts of the book was the "Tips for Online Dating" section, that included things such as not being discouraged, how to consider looking for multiple singles, considering your profile as a resume, and so many more tips that can be beneficial and help you with Online Dating. Chemistry and Numbers Online dating Guide also talks about the importance of staying safe while online dating.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Essential Guide For Every Singleton!, December 10, 2006
This review is from: Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide (Paperback)
Online dating has been one of the major growth industries of the past few years. Fewer and fewer people are going out to meet potential partners. Instead, they can browse through website after website looking for their perfect match. However, the problem is knowing where to begin. There are hundreds of sites to choose from and no real way of finding out which one? Or is there?

Steve Monas's book "Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide" solves every problem you may ever have with online dating by taking you through everything you need to know step by step in language even a complete idiot can understand. He offers great advice on every aspect of online dating from what to expect, to the type of photo to upload, to how to register your profile on the various sites. It is the definitive guide to online dating and is an absolute must have for anyone even contemplating entering the Internet dating arena.

Monas begins the book with the essential `need to knows' of online dating. He provides comprehensive pointers that cover safety, which is always good to know. Without letting on too much about the book, you have to read it because it includes things that you may not even think of before speaking to potential dates. I guess it is mainly common sense, but I have to say I did not think of half of the tips he gives. Other areas he covers are tips regarding what to expect and how to choose a photo. To make the most out of an online dating subscription you HAVE to read this, otherwise it will be money down the drain. One thing I love about these sections is that Monas makes you feel like a human. He refutes the image of Internet daters as freaks that can't date through normal means. He acknowledges the fact that some of us do not have the time to go out and meet people in bars and points out that dating sites' success rates are higher than singles who choose to meet others in that way. He makes us feel normal, which is always reassuring as well as the truth!

Monas's book is well worth a read for the millions of us who lack the time to date by conventional and accepted means. Dating websites save us time and money, but so will this book. I highly recommend this book because I cannot find fault with it in any way, shape or form. It offers an insight that no other publication does and is the essential companion to 21st Century dating. The question is, can you afford not to purchase it?

5.0 out of 5 stars Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide, December 8, 2006
This review is from: Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide (Paperback)
This book is a must have if you are even thinking about online dating. Covering every detail of online dating from safety, to summarizing the major online services, to special niche websites, this book is a comprehensive guide to everything you need to know about online dating.

There is a chapter for the most widely available online dating services. Every service has its own chapter. A comprehensive, objective review of each dating service is given. This review covers company background, legal actions, screen shots, pro's and con's of using the service, fees, and more. This handbook of online dating services should be required reading for everyone looking into dating services on the internet.

Another topic that the author delves into is online safety. Although you may be anonymous online, there are still safety issues that need to be considered. This book gives you a good baseline on how to protect your personal safety and privacy.

Finally, there is a list of niche websites that have very specialized dating services. For instance, there is mention of an online dating service for individuals with disabilities. The websites are given and there is some general information listed so that you can make an informed decision.

Overall, this is truly a comprehensive guide to online dating. It is worth a place in everyone's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thinking About Online Dating?, December 11, 2006
This review is from: Chemistry and Numbers: The Online Dating Guide (Paperback)
Don't even think about taking the next step until you've taken the time to read Steve Monas' Chemistry and Numbers.

Careful attention has been paid to giving thoughtful advice on how to use an online dating service - how to describe yourself, how to choose a picture and, perhaps more importantly, how to keep yourself safe.

But Chemistry and Numbers is far more than online dating advice. All of the major online dating sites are presented, along with objective descriptions and a listing of the benefits the service offers. A summary of these sites is also provided, giving the reader a chance to look at the included options, the site address and the cost of each service for quick comparison.

When you feel like you've exhausted almost all of your dating options, don't let online dating intimidate you. Take the time to understand its benefits and find the right site for you with Chemistry and Numbers.
