More About the Author

Rebecca W. Keller incorporated Gravitas Publications Inc. (www.gravitaspublications) in 2003 to develop and publish core sciences curricula under the Real Science-4-Kids imprint. She has authored and published Real Science-4-Kids student texts, teacher manuals, and student laboratory workbooks in chemistry, biology and physics for the home school, private, and public school markets. Her 26 textbooks serve kindergarten through eighth grade.

In 2008, Keller wrote and directed the development of a series of interdisciplinary companion texts called Kogs-4-Kids(tm), which show how science is connected closely to all other areas of study and how it affects everyday life. The categories for the Kogs series are: history, language, philosophy, arts, technology, and critical thinking.

An advocate of "open inquiry" in science, Keller has often spoken about and provided testimony on the positive effects of allowing students to "critically evaluate" all scientific data that support and/or oppose scientific conclusions. Her textbooks present students with up-to-date scientific facts and the steps of the scientific method, together with the critical thinking tools needed to help students evaluate scientific conclusions. Dr. Keller's books are as philosophically neutral as possible and do not impose any single overall philosophical interpretation such as Darwinism, Intelligent Design, or Creationism. Instead, they allow students to make up their own minds about what the data show.

Her view has been summarized in her Gravitas Geeks blog as: "In the sciences, let's teach what we know and admit what we do not actually know. Let's train children to explore authentic inquiry, evaluate the evidence, and decide for themselves what conclusions they might draw. There is nothing more important for children studying science than to learn to ask 'What if?' and then to be free to follow the data wherever it leads."

Keller didn't set out to be an author. A former research assistant professor at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, she worked in the molecular biology field. As a home-school mom, her background in biophysics, molecular biology and neuroscience coupled with her love of the dramatic and led her to prepare interesting "labs" for her children and those of her neighbors. In 2001, this success in engaging kids in science prompted her to launch a formalized training program to equip non-science teachers (usually other moms) to feel comfortable teaching science.

Real Science-4-Kids and Kogs-4-Kids offer solid science concepts in a manner understandable for youngsters. Today Real Science-4-Kids is taught in 50 states as well as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Europe, Japan and Korea. Keller's team continues to develop and test products.

I am a homeschooling mom with a science background. My daughter was asking many chemistry questions but I thought she would be too young to understand acids, bases, DNA, polymers, etc. at her age (6yo 2nd grader). I was wrong. The way things are presented in this book makes teaching tough concepts simple to this age group. My daughter especially enjoyed how atoms are displayed and used throughout the book. They are made to be almost like a cartoon character. They have the correct amount of arms depending on how many bonds they are capable of (hydrogen has one arm, carbon has four, and so on). They also have conversations such as saying hello or goodbye to other atoms during reactions. This was my daughters favorite unit for the year. By the time we had completed the book, she had a good understanding of the concepts and was able not only to present acids and bases at a science fair, but also field additional questions afterwards. Others who saw her work told her they did not understand what she was talking about until they were in high school. The reason I give this only 4 stars is because of the accompanying lab book and teachers manual (available through the publishers website). In order to get the most from this book, the labs really need to be performed as well. This book, although good on it's own, does not have the same impact as it does after the experiments. However, I found the teacher's manual was not quite up to the quality of this book (I was glad I had a science background). Despite this downfall, I would still highly recommend this book (and corresponding lab book / teacher's manual).

We absolutely love this book. The pictures are wonderful - colorful and cute. My kids love the silly faces on the different atoms. Even my 4-yr-old will say "look, there's sodium attaching to chlorine", because he remembers which color and face goes with which atom.

The book itself is hardbound and the pages are bright and glossy. All around beautiful book.

This is not baby chemistry - it's advanced stuff but written in a way kids can understand. We're really enjoying the things we're learning and most importantly, they're retaining it. You do need the teacher's manual and student text in order to get the lab stuff. Or if you're really creative you could make up labs on your own. I bought 1 student book and the kids verbally tell me their thoughts and observations. The publisher does give permission to photocopy the student labs as well, so that can save you some money.

My only complaint is that the book is so short. I wanted this to last a year, but we got done in 2 months.

I will be using all of her books. I think it is the best science program out there

My 9YO son wants to be aeronautical engineer and decided he wanted to start studying NOW! He needs to study Physics and Chemistry. I searched everywhere for age appropriate books for him and these were the only ones I could find. When we received them, I was thrilled to see they were exactly what we needed. He loves reading them, they are entertaining and easily understood. It's been great revision for me, and I'm learning new things too! It's wonderful to have books from which to teach your kids that are fun. I highly recommend them for kids 7-12.

Since the day we received this book, my 1st grader has not been able to put it down!

This is a terrific book to start your elementary students on science!

We will continue with the entire elementary series!

Many thanks to Dr. R.W. Keller! Well done.

My son is in grade 1 ( and reading) and is able to understand the concepts in this book. He finds it very interesting and was asking about more books like this.

Homeschooling an extremely intelligent and inquisitive 6-year-old is a challenge to say the least. Most science curricula created for elementary age kids is extremely simplistic, vague, and sometimes even dead wrong. Kudos to Dr. Keller for creating a chemistry book that my son eagerly looked forward to working with each week - he loved it so much that we breezed through the whole book in less than 4 months. My son learned enough about chemistry that he wowed his physician grandfather with a good grasp acids/bases, molecular structure and atomic symbols.

Real science 4 Kids Chemistry Pre level 1 is a great basic chemistry for young children. It is true chemistry done in an easy to understand format so that children can learn the basics. Each level (pre lev. 1, level 1, etc.) gets a little deeper into the subject so that by the time they are in high school they are better prepared for the though chemistry because they know all the basics. My children enjoyed this curriculum and my oldest read ahead most days because she was so into the lesson. If you do a section a day (i.e. 1.1, 1.2, and so on) you can cover a chapter a week and the book will take about 10 weeks. We needed about 3 of these books to cover a school year at that pace, but I feel it was worth the money.

My 5 year old daughter cannot get enough of this book. She begs to read it. She begs me to help her with the experiments. She knows more about atoms than I did when I started high school. We also bought the teacher manual and the experiment workbook. Both are fantastic. My only complaint is that there is a lot of writing involved and my daughter is young enough that I end up doing all the writing for her.
