About the Author

Thomas R. Gilbert has a BS in chemistry from Clarkson and a PhD in analytical chemistry from MIT. After 10 years with the Research Department of the New England Aquarium in Boston, he joined the faculty of Northeastern University, where he is currently associate professor of chemistry and chemical biology. His research interests are in chemical and science education. He teaches general chemistry and science education courses and conducts professional development workshops for K–12 teachers. He has won Northeastern’s Excellence in Teaching Award and Outstanding Teacher of First-Year Engineering Students Award. He is a fellow of the American Chemical Society and in 2012 was elected to the ACS Board of Directors.

Rein V. Kirss received both a BS in chemistry and a BA in history as well as an MA in chemistry from SUNY Buffalo. He received his PhD in inorganic chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where the seeds for this textbook were undoubtedly planted. After two years of postdoctoral study at the University of Rochester, he spent a year at Advanced Technology Materials, Inc., before returning to academics at Northeastern University in 1989. He is an associate professor of chemistry with an active research interest in organometallic chemistry.

Natalie Foster is emeritus professor of chemistry at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She received a BS in chemistry from Muhlenberg College and MS, DA, and PhD degrees from Lehigh University. Her research interests included studying poly(vinyl alcohol) gels by NMR as part of a larger interest in porphyrins and phthalocyanines as candidate contrast enhancement agents for MRI. She taught both semesters of the introductory chemistry class to engineering, biology, and other nonchemistry majors and a spectral analysis course at the graduate level. She is the recipient of the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for distinguished teaching.

Geoffrey Davies has BSc, PhD, and DSc degrees in chemistry from Birmingham University, England. He joined the faculty at Northeastern University in 1971 after postdoctoral research on the kinetics of very rapid reactions at Brandeis University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and the University of Kent at Canterbury. He is now a Matthews Distinguished University Professor at Northeastern. His research group has explored experimental and theoretical redox chemistry, alternative fuels, transmetalation reactions, tunable metal-zeolite catalysts and, most recently, the chemistry of humic substances, the essential brown animal and plant metabolites in sediments, soils, and water. He edits a column on experiential and study-abroad education in the Journal of Chemical Education and a book series on humic substances. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and was awarded Northeastern's Excellence in Teaching Award in 1981, 1993, and 1999 and its first Lifetime Achievement in Teaching Award in 2004.

I bought this book for a chemistry class that required it and ended up using it for both chem 1 and chem 2. Although I had the ebook as well, a physical copy really helped for looking things up in class and when I didnt have a computer on me.

This doesnt come with smartwork! But Smartwork can be purchased separately from the norton website.

If youre planning to buy this book, an ebook, and smartwork, you might save money by buying them in a pack from your school or elsewhere.

The item does not include Smartworks with it as required by my school.
The StudySpace as recommended by someone else is not the same as SmartWorks

This book is easy to understand, has great end of chapter questions with answers (odd numbered Q's). Also the graphic representations and end of chapter visual concept questions are helpful.

This text book is reasonable, and about half my class found the book to be informative. The other half, including myself, thought the author needlessly complicated the more straightforward aspects of ever single topic. This text seem geared toward students who don't find chemistry or science in general interesting in the first place. If you have to use this text book, try supplementing it with the Steven and Susan Zumdahl chemistry book, or at the very least get the solutions manual.

The book is useful and provides lots of practice questions at the end of each chapter. The answer key is helpful but I recommend getting the solution manual as well for those who feel like they may need extra help. The solutions manual provides the answers, explanations, and additional important information to keep in mind for every single question.

Bought it used. It was fine. I wouldn't use this book to prepare for organic chemistry though. I took organic chemistry after taking a course that required this textbook and I think another textbook might be more useful to prepare for orgo but then it also comes down the to the instructor and course material.

I needed this book for a General Chem class and the price to rent the book is half the price of buying it, so I decided to rent the book for the quarter. I received it on time but the pages are all scribbled on, however none of the pages are ripped. Beware thou, some universities want you to buy "there book" and it is actually the same book but it has a different cover page. The chapters and the pages are all the same, the only difference is the cover. So be smart and DON'T GET SWINDLED!

It was like brand new, doesn't have a single mark in it and way cheaper than buying it from the school mart.
