About the Author

Thomas R. Gilbert has a BS in chemistry from Clarkson and a PhD in analytical chemistry from MIT. After 10 years with the Research Department of the New England Aquarium in Boston, he joined the faculty of Northeastern University, where he is currently associate professor of chemistry and chemical biology and associate dean of the Graduate School of Education. His research interests are in chemical and science education. He teaches general chemistry and science education courses and conducts professional development workshops for K–12 teachers. He has won Northeastern's Excellence in Teaching Award and Outstanding Teacher of First-Year Engineering Students Award.

Rein V. Kirss received both a BS in chemistry and a BA in history as well as an M.A. in chemistry from SUNY Buffalo. He received his PhD in inorganic chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where the seeds for this textbook were undoubtedly planted. After 2 years of postdoctoral study at the University of Rochester, he spent a year at Advanced Technology Materials, Inc., before returning to academics at Northeastern University in 1989. He is an associate professor of chemistry with an active research interest in organometallic chemistry.

Natalie Foster is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. She received a BS in Chemistry from Muhlenberg College and MS, DA, and PhD degrees from Lehigh University. Her research interests include studying poly(vinyl alcohol) gels by NMR as part of a larger interest in porphyrins and phthalocyanines as candidate contrast enhancement agents for MRI. She teaches the introductory chemistry class every fall to engineering, biology, and other non-chemistry majors. Natalie also regularly teaches a spectral analysis course at the graduate level.

Geoffrey Davies has BSc, PhD, and DSc degrees in chemistry from Birmingham University, England. He joined the faculty at Northeastern University in 1971 after postdoctoral research on the kinetics of very rapid reactions at Brandeis University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and the University of Kent at Canterbury. He is now a Matthews Distinguished University Professor at Northeastern. His research group has explored experimental and theoretical redox chemistry, alternative fuels, transmetalation reactions, tunable metal-zeolite catalysts and, most recently, the chemistry of humic substances, the essential brown animal and plant metabolites in sediments, soils, and water. He edits a column on experiential and study-abroad education in the Journal of Chemical Education and a book series on humic substances. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and was awarded Northeastern's Excellence in Teaching Award in 1981, 1993, and 1999 and its first Lifetime Achievement in Teaching Award in 2004.

1.0 out of 5 stars horrid textbook, December 15, 2010
This review is from: Chemistry: The Science in Context (Second Edition) (Hardcover)
This textbook did a horrible job of explaining things- in particular i struggled with hybridized electron orbitals, and everything that had to do with electrons. I got a good grade in the class, but definitely not because I learned any concepts. The first chapter in my organic chemistry book this semester (Bruice) was a general overview of so many things from general chemistry: acids and bases, bonds, electron orbitals, hybridizations and dipole moments (etc) and actually explained them in a way I was able to understand.

2.0 out of 5 stars Horrible book for a college chemistry class, September 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Chemistry: The Science in Context (Second Edition) (Hardcover)
I'll try to make this short and sweet. I'm an Engineering student, and only need to take two semesters of Chemistry. Lets just say that it is probably my worst subject. I have a hard enough time grasping the concepts as it is, and this book definitely does NOT help.

Concepts and problems are presented in a very confusing way, and definitions are often unclear. I give it two stars because they occasionally include some useful examples to help illustrate concepts, and of course Amazon purchasing is great. It seems like the authors assume you already have a clear understanding of the material. I know college chemistry is a tough and in-depth course, but this book takes it over the top.

If you have to buy this book for a course, I guess you are out of luck so just be prepared. If you are looking to buy this for review or something to that effect, look elsewhere!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than most other Textbooks for Gen Chem, November 4, 2011
This review is from: Chemistry: The Science in Context (Second Edition) (Hardcover)
I borrowed this book from the library after scanning so many other books. This was the only book that really made sense to me. The explanation of Quantum Mechanics and Electronic Configuration was the best I have read. Wwe were using the Central Science and it was horrible confusing compared to this one.

I loved reading this book. It was pleasant.
