These authors have created a "Custom California" edition to try to limit the resell value by artificially breaking up their textbook market into smaller segments. This is a new despicable practice in the textbook sales arena. Not to mention that they are already on their 8th edition. So you know how long this edition will last. Maybe one or two years before they decide they need to rearrange the chapters to generate additional profits.

Dr. Steven Zumdahl works at the University of Chicago, so I'm sure he is doing much better than most of his minimum wage earning students who are trying to pay for his overpriced chemistry book with little resell value.

Everybody knows that college textbooks use shady market tactics to increase sales. However, the Zumdahls have gone to a new low by creating a "Custom California" edition.

This book is horrible. It assumes you know concepts that it explains 10 pages later and it leaves out a lot of basic information and steps that you then have to google (thank god for Yahoo Answers). I've always done pretty good with this kind of thing but this book only made things worse.

Most of this book is pretty straight forward, but at times, its a little contradictory and unclear. For instance, in Chapter 18 which includes Electrochemistry, sometimes the problems take into account water and sometimes they don't, and they don't address that problem at all so it leaves me frustrated. Sometimes it almost seems like the examples and concepts were taught pretty clearly, but when the problems came around, I was caught off guard by how awkward the questions were and the assumptions some of them had me make.

I rented the Kindle Edition of this book because it was considerably cheaper than renting the newest edition. What is not mentioned on the product page is that the Kindle Edition is missing several images because of "copyright restrictions"; these are replaced with large gray boxes. Amazon and Cengage should be ashamed of marketing this book without clear warning that it is incomplete. Even worse, textbook rentals are apparently not subject to the usual 7-day return policy for Kindle books, so my money is gone for good. I will probably be buying my Cengage books USED in dead-tree format from here on out.

This textbook is terrible, it contains very bad examples and fails to teach you the fundamental concepts of chemistry. I took ap chemistry 2 years ago and the book that we used was MUCH better than the book im using right now in college (this book). I believe the book that we used was called "chemistry, the central science." I think I'm going to start using that book instead of the zumdahl text. Overall, bad book.

Zumdahl's textbook is basically for college level chemistry, but should not be used for AP. This was the required textbook for my AP Chem class, but I feel that Zumdahl's book is boring and does not provide enthusiasm for students to enter into chemistry. His honors book, World of Chemistry, is better. This is a book for chem majors in college, not higher level high school students. I would suggest Kotz or Masterton. By the way, even though I was introduced to this book and read a few chapters, I still am majoring in chemistry currently, mainly because I chose another book, listed above, which got me a 5.

Sadly...this new book doesn't come with the OWL access card... if I knew that the new books don't come with the access cards I would definitely choose a used book.

It was just what I needed. I couldn't beat the price. The new book was $300 so I saved a fortune.

I am a straight-A student and I study my butt off but this book is really awful and made chemistry much more difficult than it should be. My dad (who has a degree in Chemistry and an MD) took a look and told me to find a different/better textbook, so it isn't just me.

As other reviews mention, it is inconsistent, confusing, and frequently assumes knowledge of concepts that are never explained or are explained in later chapters (after you were supposed to have already used them). It doesn't help that it cost me an arm and a leg at the campus bookstore.

I HIGHLY recommend finding a better textbook to learn from. If you need to do the end of chapter problems for homework, make photocopies from the library's textbook. Save your money and avoid frustration.

I bought a used Timberlake text for about 1/6 of what I paid for this Zumdahl text and it explains things 100% better.
