The image on the front cover depicts a carbon nanotube emerging from a glowing plasma of hydrogen and carbon, as it forms around particles of a metal catalyst. Carbon nanotubes are a recently discovered allotrope of carbon. Three other allotropes of carbon-buckyballs, graphite, and diamond-are illustrated at the left, as is the molecule methane, CH4, from which nanotubes and buckyballs can be made. The element carbon forms an amazing number of compounds with structures that follow from simple methane, found in natural gas, to the complex macromolecules that serve as the basis of life on our planet. The study of chemistry also follows from the simple to the more complex, and the strength of this text is that it enables students with varied backgrounds to proceed together to significant levels of achievement.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very convenient tool, January 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Chemistry, Student Solutions Manual: The Study of Matter and Its Changes (Paperback)
The solutions manual is an essential tool for any scholar hoping to further their understanding in the many varying aspects of chemistry covered by the textbook. It goes back to that old saying that "practice makes perfect." This solutions manual allows for more problems to be covered than would be possible in a conventional lecture, thus reinforcing the material and allowing for greater overall understanding and success in chemistry. There are a few more difficult problems that are glazed over on occasion and some questions that are more open ended in nature are often left out. However, overall this solutions manual is a great tool to be used by anyone seeking to further advance themselves.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite ALL the answers you'd expect, August 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Chemistry, Student Solutions Manual: The Study of Matter and Its Changes (Paperback)
I originally purchased this item to be able to check my answers to the All practice problems at the end of each chapter - especially the ones that did not have an answer in the back of the book. I thought that this solution manual would give answers to each question, but it only gives answers to the questions that already have answers in the back of the book (as well as the practice problems throughout the chapter). Pros: the answers reported are more detailed and show steps taken to derive a final answer; the practice problems in the green boxes throughout the chapter are ALL worked through in the answer key. Cons: I have found discrepancies in this solution manual and the reported answer in the back of the textbook. In the 6 chapters I used the solution manual, I found 3 typos. Overall you can't beat having MORE details to help problem solve. I certainly needed it in my chem course. However, if you are doing OK with the answers reported in the back of the text OR you already have access to the online Wiley Plus resources, you probably don't need this solution manual.

Unfortunately, I had to return the product. But the return process went smoothly as suspected. Thanks for everything!
