Product Description

Authors Steven and Susan Zumdahl offer all the elements instructors need for their general chemistry course. They bring a conceptual approach to chemistry and integrate problem-solving skills throughout, helping students transition from theory to practice. A strong emphasis on models, real-world applications, and visual learning prevails throughout the text. The Seventh Edition seamlessly integrates the strengths of the Zumdahl approach through a comprehensive and interwoven print and technology program. Enhanced Sample Exercises, online homework problems, and Classroom Response System content help instructors assess conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills, while new animations and images support visual learning. In addition, Houghton Mifflin offers implementation services through our TeamUP program to help instructors and students get the most out of the text and its supplements.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best chemistry textbooks., January 9, 2009
I really have no idea what others are talking about, because my experience with the book has been the complete opposite. I think this is one of the best chem books I've ever had the pleasure of using. In AP Chem, the first textbook the class used was very convoluted and confusing, and did not have nearly as many diagrams. Halfway through, we started using this text and it made everything so much easier and clearer, especially the acid/base equilibrium chemistry. The book, for example, includes many examples of different weak/strong acid/base combinations, and how to calculate the pH, etc, what happens when a strong base is added, and whatnot. It gives a very easy to follow outline that works for each problem, and how to think about it intuitively (like what the interactions of the ions that are present in solution will be). Maybe the other sections aren't as good? It is very comprehensive. As a 3rd year undergrad at a top university, I still find myself referencing this book before delving into my chemistry texts, as a refresher on the basic principles first. If you think it is sort of dry to read (which I don't notice), I would much rather a clear, straight-to-the-point text that tells me exactly how to think about problems, than some kind of chemistry novel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Info-packed, yet convoluted..., December 10, 2007
I feel bad giving this a book a two, simply because of the quality of the information in it. It goes over everything you would ever need to know about chemistry, and in great detail... However, This textbook is exactly what the name implies, a textbook. The authors make no effort to simplify the info, they divulge all of their chemistry knowledge in a dry, monotonous format.

This is our high-schools text book for AP Chemistry. (College level chemistry offered to high-schoolers.) I'm sure this is a fantastic textbook for those simply looking for cold, hard information, but if you want something digestible, this is not it. Again, I apologize to you college students and professors who think this is a fantastic source of information. (Because it most certainly is.)

However, if you want a digestible, easy to read textbook, look into Raymond Chang's "Chemistry." This was my sister's college chemistry textbook, and I now use it in the place of our Zumdahl text... I don't feel I am doing Chang's text justice by "babying" it. It provides just as much info as the Zumdahl textbook, but in a more comfortable, and logical, format. I would choose Chang's textbook over Zumdahl any day.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Easy to Read Textbook, June 9, 2009
Normally, I would have thought a chemistry textbook would be one of the most boring books out there. When I ordered this book for my class I was pleasantly suprised. The text is very clear and relavant. Relavant in that it is full of connections to the real world. This is an excellent textbook and, as a college student, I highly recommend it.
