Editorial Reviews

Review

“More than four turbulent decades at the epicenter of political life have made Dick Cheney one of the most consequential political figures in the nation’s history. You will see important chapters of that history—including some that are still being writ- ten—differently after savoring this wonderfully conceived volume in which Cheney converses with one of Washington’s most seasoned journalists.”
—GEORGE F. WILL, author, Pulitzer Prize–winning columnist, and Fox News commentator

“Invaluable...James Rosen has given us a rare and compelling view of how Dick Cheney sees the world and himself. With searching questions and clear-eyed follow-ups, Rosen served as history’s interlocutor in a series of revealing—and inevitably controversial—conversations.”
—JON MEACHAM, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and author of Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush

“An essential document of modern America.... With the depth of a historian and the instincts of an investigative reporter, James Rosen adds considerably to our under- standing of Dick Cheney and the administrations in which he served.... Offers crucial context and fresh reporting on many of the most controversial decisions of the Bush- Cheney years.... A must-read.”
—STEPHEN F. HAYES, senior writer for the Weekly Standard and author of Cheney: The Untold Story of America’s Most Powerful and Controversial Vice President

“Indispensable.... James Rosen has a knack for asking probing, unusual, and some- times uncomfortable questions.... His skill as an interviewer is vividly on display in the hours he spent interrogating Dick Cheney.”
—JONATHAN KARL, chief White House correspondent for ABC News

“Fascinating, revelatory, and valuable.... A contribution to our current political dia- logue that will also serve as a basic source for the historians of the future.”
—MICHAEL BESCHLOSS, author of Presidential Courage: Brave Leaders and How They Changed America, 1789–1989

“James Rosen skillfully lets Cheney be Cheney, bringing to life a third of a century on the front lines of history.”
—I. LEWIS LIBBY, former chief of staff to Vice President Cheney

From the Inside Flap

"Dick Cheney says he thinks I'm the worst president of his lifetime—which is interesting, because I think Dick Cheney is the worst president of my lifetime." —Barack Obama

With this jibe, President Obama acknowledged the extraordinary influence of Richard Cheney.

Armed with deep experience at the highest levels of government, Cheney confronted the threats facing America after 9/11 and emerged as the most powerful vice president in U.S. history and the most controversial political figure of our time.

In Cheney One on One, the man at the center of four decades of political upheaval—from Watergate to Iraq—takes stock of his life and legacy with unprecedented candor. In December 2014, Cheney sat down with James Rosen, chief Washington correspondent for Fox News, for three days of oral history interviews. No subject was off limits. The result is the most penetrating and detailed interrogation of Cheney ever conducted, an inside account of his extraordinary life and times.

Informed by his own reporting and the vast literature of the Bush-Cheney era, Rosen steers the conversation to the most sensitive subjects, some never addressed before:

How Cheney went from Yale dropout to White House chief of staff by his mid-thirties
The tense hours after 9/11, when Cheney ran the government from a White House bunker
Cheney’s role in shaping intelligence, sur- veillance, detention, and interrogation policies
His clashes with Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell
Cheney’s assessment of the mistakes he and President Bush made in Iraq
His views on life, death, and God—and much more

Rich and probing, highly readable yet supremely illuminating, Cheney One on One rescues a seminal figure from his “Darth Vader” caricature and confirms James Rosen’s reputation as one of the leading journalists of our time.

"Cheney One on One" Is a fascinating journey into the mind of one of the most interesting characters of our lifetime. I highly recommend this book. Anyone who is even slightly interested in politics, history, or current events will find this book hard to put down. Mr. Rosen is such a gifted writer. I felt as though I was sitting in the room while the Vice President was being interviewed. A++

Love him or hate him, Dick Cheney has become one of America's most polarizing political figures. Much of the populace, though, including those who describe him with a unique invective, forgets just how instrumental he has been in American politics for four decades. The man has served as a Congressman, House Republican Conference Chair, Minority Whip, Secretary of Defense, Chief of Staff to the President, and finally, as Vice President.
Cheney is a virtual treasure trove of American history. From the mid-1970's until his retirement in 2009, he has been privy to most of the critical decisions made in the running of the country's business. In many, he has been at the helm. Moreover, the times in which he played a role have been…consequential. And moments of consequence are breeding grounds for controversy.
It is in this fertile soil that James Rosen, not only one of the country's most intellectual minds but also one of its most objective and thorough journalists, sows his crop. And is it ever a bumper! One of the things that struck me was the degree of background preparation Rosen did for this three-day marathon. Imagine yourself trying to ask substantial, news-breaking, thought-provoking questions for a career—any career—spanning four decades. That's a whole lot of prep, and it shows. Another thing that struck me was the level of rhetoric that was exchanged between the two men as they verbally went mano a mano. These guys don't play in the little leagues. While the language and content are rich, the subject matter is compelling. You just don't want to put this book down. It does, in fact, make a very quick read.

A terrific book by Mr. Rosen, essentially a life story of VP Cheney, showing how his decades of experience, and how the lessons he learned from history shaped his decision making process and the recommendations he would make to the President. Most interesting was the detail in which Mr. Rosen elicited the importance Cheney placed on intelligence information, admittedly inexact at times and how Cheney coupled this intelligence with his knowledge and personal involvement in past historical events, particularly regarding Iraq and WMD, in making his recommendation (s) to the President. In response to Mr. Rosen, Cheney made it clear he would not allow past foreign policy mistakes, political pressures or bureaucratic issues at the Department of State to encumber his analysis. Mr. Cheney's actions post 9-11 were placed in historical context and there for all to read. In particular, I found Mr. Cheney's comments on the past North Korean nuclear negotiations and is view of the State Department's desire to get a deal at any cost eerily similar to the recent Iranian negotiations. Mr. Rosen's preparation for his three day interview of the Vice President was amazing.

A very well laid out question and response series of the events that took place during Cheney's life in government with the majority of it concentrating on his time as Vice President. Great read. Would recommend if government actions interest you.

Although I did not buy this book on Amazon, (it 'is' a Christmas gift from my husband that I found and read 5 days before Christmas, as if he can hide anything from me, ha!) I almost felt compelled to write this. I just loved this book. I think Mr. Rosen is one of the most adroit reporters today. This comes through in this book. The conversational style, which I find so refreshing and an easy flow reading, especially while sneaking to finish it. I felt as if I were sitting in the room with Mr. Rosen and the Vice-President. If only. I happen to be a great admirer of Mr. Cheney, along with # 43, (add in 40, 41, too, you get the picture) but if you're not, taking some time to go into the thoughts and life experiences of the Vice-President, may give you a prospective you may find interesting. And if you're like me, this read is a must. Thanks, Mr. Rosen.

Not being someone who has any problem putting a book down and coming back to it later, I must say that I did find it difficult to put this book down. It captured my interest with every single question and answer. I actually felt like I was sitting right there in the room with Vice President Cheney and James Rosen as this interview was taking place. I found myself grabbed into the conversation and wishing it would go longer.

The style of writing in this book is that of an ongoing interview with "no holds barred" questioning of the Vice President. The questions cover so many fascinating areas of interest including, of course, the events and thought process leading up to, as well as following the Iraq war. They discuss Russia's changing and advancing role in the world as well as the issue of North Korea's nuclear proliferation. VP Cheney reveals with absolute clarity his inner most thoughts on the Obama administration and how its actions, and inactions have, and will continue to affect events centered in the Middle East.

The book takes you from his childhood to present day with very in depth discussion of so many issues that are extremely relevant to the issues of today, including cyber warfare and the United States' place and role in world events. Another very interesting area of questioning in this regard deals with the interaction, relationships, and conflicts that have taken place between the State Department, Defense and the CIA.

One thing that particularly impressed me was the amazing level of research and preparation that Mr Rosen had done in order to effect this three day interview. The number of news reports, other books, and manuscripts that are referenced is beyond anything I have seen before for a book like this.
