Chenier's Practical Math Application Guide: For Do-it-yourselfers, Trades People, Students, Etc.

This is hands down one of the most practical real life math books available. As a full time carpenter for 30 years, I've used solutions to problems illustrated in this book many times; and it's a great teaching aid to ones new to the trade. Worth keeping in the truck as a reference.

It is hard to give this book a certain number of stars because I am not good at math. My son is interested in learning to be a tradesman (an electrician, specifically), and we homeschool, so I was looking for a math curriculum that would go hand in hand with that interest. Fortunately, my husband was a carpenter in a former life:) and is helpful to work these problems out. My disappointment is that there are no answers in the book, nor an answer key to buy, that I could find, or a solutions manual. This means that we get to "brush up" or learn the skills at the same time, which is time consuming. Otherwise, I think it is fairly well thought out and the accompaniment, the Practical Math Dictionary, is a must to go with it.

Awesome, wish I had this back in high school and college too. Packed full of useful knowledge in EASY to understand text. Helps me with most formulas that are complex and hard to remember. Bought the dictionary also, both are worth their weight.

I work as an exhibitions installer/fabricator for a fine arts museum. I recently purchased both Chenier's books, the Practical Math Application Guide and the Practical Math Dictionary as a personal enrichment/refresher course for construction math. I wish I'd known about these books 20 years ago! The way the concepts are explained and they way the books show practical applications for everyday construction problems using traditional tools is better than in any other books I've used. Follow them cover to cover from page 1, even if you already know the math, and work the problems in the tests. It'll refresh your memory and probably teach you some new and easy methods you weren't even aware of for problem solving. Since beginning practice two weeks ago, my dependence upon my construction calculator has diminished to near zero, and the speed and confidence with which I work has increased along with the accuracy and quality of the finished products I make. Thank you Chenier's for a truly great set of books!
