4.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection With a Few Bonuses, July 20, 2003
By
This review is from: Cher - Greatest Hits: 1965-1992 [Import #1/Geffen] (Audio CD)
This greatest hits collection is one of Cher's best ever. There are a few notable hits missing including Half Breed and The Beat Goes On along with the more current Believe and Song for the Lonely. Still, there are a couple of bonus cuts that are hard to find elsewhere. Cher's rendition of Many Rivers To Cross from the Live at the Mirage concert is one of the best cuts ever. Dead Ringer for Love, Cher's duet with Meat Loaf is a great find, too. While this can't be labeled the definitive collection of greatest hits, it certainly deserves a place in any Cher lover's collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars UnBELIEVEable!!!, September 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cher - Greatest Hits: 1965-1992 [Import #1/Geffen] (Audio CD)
Before Believe, Cher racked up a pretty impressive list of hit records, almost all of which are included on this collection. Essentially, this is the same collection as the American "If I Could Turn Back Time: Cher's Greatest Hits," with a few notable exceptions. The true highlights of this collection are the previously unreleased "Oh No Not My Baby," written by Carole King, and the Dianne Warren penned "Whenever You're Near." Also available here are "Many Rivers To Cross," from Extravaganza and "Dead Ringer For Love" with Meat Loaf. The previous song being tender and emotional, the latter just plain rock'n'roll fun. Between the two choices, I prefer this European release because it offers more that you probably haven't heard before. The only things missing are "After All," and "Take Me Home" (Not a great loss)

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good!, August 9, 2004

This review is from: Cher - Greatest Hits: 1965-1992 [Import #1/Geffen] (Audio CD)
Yes, it's yet ANOTHER Cher gits collection, but this one has some fun extras: namely the first three tracks, none of which were hits ... but are pretty great nonetheless (especially "Oh No, Not My Baby"). Also, this CD's version of "I Found Someone" is a slightly different mix than the one released here in the States. Overall, a terrific CD, even though the #1 hit "Half-Breed" was not included (Was it not a hit in the UK, where this CD was released?). I whole-heartedly recommend this to Cher fans!

This European release of Chers' Greatest Hits is fairly good, but the range is so diverse that it seems that 2 discs were in order. The singing is good and the productions varied. Two unreleased songs from the studio and an additional concert piece, "Many Rivers to Cross",try to bring things up to date. The best tracks are hard to pinpoint as they are all generally good. My fave is "Save Up All Your Tears". Too bad the origional Sonny Bono "Bang Bang", and her 1st Imperial hit "All I Really Want to Do", have been ignored. Not to mention her "Take Me Home" number from 79'. It's a good compilation, but too abbreviated for an artist who has been with us for so long.America, where is your release on this? I hear its' due in Oct. 98...Her last cd had a number of tracks superior to these new ones here, including"It's A Mans' World".

5.0 out of 5 stars Lace, Wigs and AOR, December 10, 2002
By
This review is from: Cher - Greatest Hits: 1965-1992 [Import #1/Geffen] (Audio CD)
Cher brings 3 new tracks to life on this greatest hits collection released in Europe back in 1992.
OH NO, NOT MY BABY is a Carole King song brillianty re-interpreted by Cher in the footsteps of THE SHOOP SHOOP SONG.
TOO MANY RIVERS TO CROSS is a Jimmy Cliff cover of one of his reggae hits of the '80's, recorded live at the Mirage in Vegas during her Extravaganza Tour.
WHENEVER YOU'RE NEAR is the absolute standout tune, great AOR, very much in tune with all of her material appearing on her latest 3 albums for geffen.
Some singles have been left out (HEART OF STONE and AFTER ALL), but they included a duet with Meatloaf written by Jim Steinman (not really a great track, though...) and some tunes from her '70's period.
Plus an extensive booklet with lotsa pics...a feast for the eyes!
A must have for AOR lovers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cher:- Cher's Greatest Hits 1965-1992, August 20, 2005
This review is from: Cher - Greatest Hits: 1965-1992 [Import #1/Geffen] (Audio CD)
This is definately my fave Greatest Hits collection that Cher has put out!! It only bags up 13 of her hits from 1965-1992, and includes 3 new tracks, but there's 4 songs that are really hard to find anywhere else! 3 of them are most noticably the new tracks: "Oh No Not My Baby" (Carole King cover), "Whenever You're Near" and "Many Rivers To Cross" (Live at the Mirage) (Jimmy Cliff cover). The other one is the duet with Meat Loaf, "Dead Ringer For Love". This song is not available on any other Cher CD! These 4 songs are all brill, but the 12 other hits are also a keeper if you're a real Cher fan!

OH NO NOT MY BABY
Awesome track. Cher's version of the Carole King classic really comes to life on this CD!

WHENEVER YOU'RE NEAR
This song is really cool. The new tracks just get better and better!

MANY RIVERS TO CROSS (LIVE AT THE MIRAGE)
This version of Many Rivers To Cross sung live, is one of the best cuts I've ever heard. Cher's vocals are amazing!

LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING
From her album Love Hurts. This song is above average, but it's not of my faves!

SAVE UP ALL YOUR TEARS
From her album Love Hurts. This song is absolutely brilliant, and im my opinion, better than LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING!

THE SHOOP SHOOP SONG (IT'S IN HIS KISS)
From her album Love Hurts, from the film Mermaids. This song is a classic, and it was #1 for Cher in the UK, where this album was released! Great!

IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME
From her album Heart Of Stone. This is my second fave on the disc, it's such an excellent effort from the diva!

JUST LIKE JESSE JAMES
From her album Heart Of Stone. This country/western effort is awesome, and one of Cher's best singles.

HEART OF STONE
From her album Heart Of Stone. This song was originally recorded by Bucks Fizz, but Cher's version is, most-likely, better!

I FOUND SOMEONE
From her album Cher. This is were Cher's rock talents all kicked off. My third fave on the whole album.

WE ALL SLEEP ALONE
From her album Cher. Bloody fantastic! This is my fave Cher single EVER! I think it's a bit under-rated, and certainly deserved more than it achieved. Despite being so under-rated, it became a fan favourite with everyone! At the end of the day, I could listen to this song for ages and never get bored of it. It makes me want to listen to the song right now. Oh, I can, I have this album! Ha-ha!

BANG-BANG
From her album Cher. There are 2 versions of Bang-Bang available. The one on here is the rock/metal version from 1987, which is better than the average original. The original was recorded in 1966.

DEAD RINGER FOR LOVE (WITH MEAT LOAF)
This became a big hit in the UK! The song is excellent, and the video is equally fantastic! The song hit the top 5 in the UK. This is the only album where you can find this song!

DARK LADY
From the album Gypsies, Tramps And Thieves. The song is brilliant, and it was a US #1 for Cher! Definately a high-light, and the most mysterious song on the album!

GYPSIES, TRAMPS AND THIEVES
From the album Gypsies, Tramps And Thieves. Another brilliant song, need I say more???

I GOT YOU BABE (SONNY & CHER)
From the album Look At Us. This is definately Sonny & Cher's best effort along with Baby Don't Go! I love it!

Overall, a few songs on the compilation are missed (LOVE HURTS, THE BEAT GOES ON, ETC...), but I still recommend it to all the Cher fans for the awesome new tracks. If you want a collection of Cher's hits from her Geffen years, then here it is! BUY IT!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mostly 1987-1992, May 13, 2008
This review is from: Cher - Greatest Hits: 1965-1992 [Import #1/Geffen] (Audio CD)
This British compilation spanned Cher's entire career from the beginning up to 1992, when the album was compiled. However, the sixties are only represented by I got you babe (the classic Sonny and Cher duet) and a 1987 re-recording of Bang bang, while the seventies are also just represented by two songs (Gypsies tramps and thieves, Dark lady) but as Cher only made the UK charts twice during that decade, nothing essential is omitted. As I already had a comprehensive double CD of Cher's sixties and seventies music (Singles plus) when I bought this, I wasn't concerned about the omission of several hits from the sixties, but I nevertheless feel that it is necessary to point out that this compilation is mainly about the years 1987 to 1992.

Although Cher's music has always been popular in Britain, her chart history is patchy - some big hits including three number ones, though only one of them (Shoop shoop song, better known to oldies fans as It's in his kiss) is included here because the others (Love can build a bridge, Believe) were recorded after 1992. A more recent hits compilation that includes those tracks is available, but if you're particularly interested in Cher's music from 1987 to 1992, this is worth a listen.

Apart from Shoop shoop song, Cher's other top major solo hits of the period (I found someone, If I could turn back time, Just like Jesse James, Love and understanding) are all here, together with some of her minor hits. Also included is Dead ringer for love, which provided Meat Loaf with a British top five hit. Cher sang on that track but was not credited on the single release.

The inclusion of the three older recordings as the three closing tracks merely serves to remind me that I still prefer Cher's music from the sixties and seventies, but this is a fine compilation and I know that there will be plenty of fans who think this period was Cher's best.
