Book Description

Edward Gorey meets The Bunny Suicides in a murderously funny tale from the creator of It’s Happy Bunny

From the creator of the hugely successful It’s Happy Bunny franchise comes a little piece of work named Cherise, who may be, it turns out, a not-so-nice niece. In the tradition of Edward Gorey’s The Gashlycrumb Tinies, Jim Benton’s first adult picture book, with hilarious rhymes and illustrations, is a darkly comic masterpiece of the macabre.

“She was orphaned quite young In a mysterious way, Her parents just up and vanished one day.”

The bloody footprints leading out of Cherise’s bedroom are the first clue that perhaps the little darling with the bow in her hair is not an angel. As Cherise is shuttled from one aunt’s home to another, her aunts vanish, meeting inventive and hysterical ends. With a killer punch line on its final page, Jim Benton’s Cherise the Niece will leave readers laughing.

About the Author

Jim Benton is a writer and artist who might draw a happy bunny one moment and write poems about a scary little niece the next. It’s probably best not to ask why. His characters, including It’s Happy Bunny, Franny K. Stein, and the New York Times bestseller Dear Dumb Diary, are licensed worldwide and appear in books and calendars, and on T-shirts, stickers, magnets, and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars morbid and hysterical, November 11, 2010
This review is from: Cherise the Niece (Hardcover)
I love this little book. In fact, I used it for a primer lesson on inference and characterization with my sixth graders. Great illustrations and slightly elusive little poems for each page with a clever, witty ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Humor but a Real Treat!!!, September 16, 2010
This review is from: Cherise the Niece (Hardcover)
According to the [...] website: "The National Cartoonist Society Nominated Cherise The Niece as one of just three in the category of Best Illustrated Book!!"

And I can believe it. The chosen illustrations and simple rhymes are exactly what are needed for this little story.

If dark humor is your cup of tea, then I highly recommend "Cherise the Niece" for a chuckle!

A word of caution: Don't let the cartoonish nature of this book fool you, this book is not for children. As it states, it is definitely for 14+.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rather dull, January 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cherise the Niece (Hardcover)
The bored/tired look of Cherise accompanied with uninspiring rhymes just makes this an empty read.
