2.0 out of 5 stars Should be classifed as historical fiction, not historical romance, March 31, 2006
By
This review is from: Cherish the Dream (Paperback)
From the back cover:

They cherished a moment in time when dreams triumphed on the wings of love...

From childhood through nursing school, Katherine and Sarah were best friend. Now they set out to take all that life had to offer--and were swept up in the rugged, positively breathtaking world of two young pilots, men who took to the skies with a bold spirit. And who dared them to love.

Together they embraced a tumultuous world where luck and desire meet. Where the winds of war challenged their hearts. And where passion soared beyond their wildest dreams.

And my review:

I've enjoyed books by Jodi Thomas in the past, but this one missed the mark. This is a double romance, the story of two best friends, Katherine and Sarah, who fall in love with two pilots in the early 1900s, the days of the Wright brothers, in the days when flying was new and dangerous.

My main complaint with this book was that the romance took a backseat to the historical fiction part of this story. And what little romance there was in this book felt rushed and awkward. It was like the author wanted to get the romance part of this story out of the way as quickly as possible. She would ignore the romance part of the story to develop the plots of flying and nursing the mentally ill in 1910. Then it was like she would suddenly remember that this was supposed to be a romance novel, skip back to the romance for a cursory page or two, throw out a contrived, supposedly romantic scene, only to skip back to her other plots and ignore the romance again.

And what little romance there was did not feel very believable or engage the reader's emotions. Bart and Sarah end up sleeping together (I'd say falling into bed, but there was no bed in sight) when they still barely know one another, and the reader is supposed to just believe that it's love. Having the characters say the words doesn't magically make it believable. It felt more like silly infatuation or lust to me. This is not what I'm looking for in a romance novel. Katherine and Cody's story didn't fair much better.

I wouldn't recommend this unless you're a die-hard fan of this author. And even if you are, I'd still say that you're buying at your own risk. This book is not up to her usual standards.

This book is an excellent read and is so interesting. It will have you captured within reading the prolouge. I highly recommend it. It has a lot of twists and turns. Just the whole story line is great, mixed with happiness but also deep sadness! Great read!!!
