A Madonna Song To Truly Cherish!,
By Busy Body (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cherish / Supernatural (Audio CD)
In September 1989 Madonna released Cherish, the third single from her massive No.1 album Like A Prayer. The song peaked at No.3 in the UK, and spent a total of 8 weeks on the chart. The song was a big hit, but didn't spend much time on the charts - 8 weeks is not very long for a Madonna song, when they usually spend around 14 or 15 weeks on the chart.
Cherish opens with a joyous and melodic beat that instantly opens the scene for the song. Madonna then begins singing her first verse, "So tired of the broken hearts and losing at this game, before I start this dance, I take a chance. I'm telling you I want more than just romance." She then goes onto a bridge which begins instantly after the first verse, "You are my destiny, I can't let go, baby can't you see? Cupid, please take your aim at me." The drums and the keyboard then build up for the opening first chorus with the fabulous and lightweight lyrics, "I cherish the thought, of always having you here by my side. Oh baby I cherish the joy, you keep bringing into my life, I'm always singing. I cherish the strength, you got the power to make me feel good. Oh baby, I perish the thought of ever leaving, I never would." The song then instantly begins its fun second verse, "I was never satisfied with casual encounters. I can't hide the need for two hearts that bleed, with burning love that's the way it's got to be. Romeo and Juliet, they never felt this way I bet. So don't underestimate my point of view..." The second chorus then kicks in, and Madonna's upbeat and lively vocals lift the song to new heights of pleasure and happiness. The beat then starts up again, as Madonna sings "Who? You! Can't get anywhere, I won't let you. Who? You! I could never forget to. Cherish is the word I use to remind me of...your love." Madonna then repeats her chorus a few more times as the backing singers sing, "Can't get anywhere, can't get anywhere." The song gradually fades out leaving you feeling very fresh and lively. The video to Cherish was directed by the late (and legendary) photographer Herb Ritts. The video is set on a beach where Madonna frolics with male mermaids..mermen even! The video is black and white, and Madonna looks stunning as she dances around in the water in nothing but a revealing black dress. She looks a lot like Marilyn Monroe in this video, especially at the time where Miss Monroe had hundreds of photos taken of her on a beach in June 1962 (two months before her tragic death) after she was fired by 20th Century Fox. Again, Madonna makes a striking resemblance to the screen icon. Overall, Cherish is definitely a 5-star song and worthy of the classic status it has achieved, much like Madonna's other 1980's hits.

A Cd To Cherish,
By MaverickDGA (Oakwood, GA) - See all my reviews

This song is a classics 80's Tune by Madonna. It is has a very typical Madonna sound to it.
1. Cherish (Extended Version): A pretty decent remix of this classic tune, not much differnt from the orginal just longer. 2. Cherish (7"Mix/Edit): The radio version, that appeared on The Immacualte Collection. 3. Supernatural: An unreleased B-Side. This song is truly wonderful. This ranks as one of Madonna's best B-sides. The cd is worth the money for this song.

Well, for anyone who doesn't know...
This is of course a classic track and one of Madonna's best. One of its charms is that it is inspired by an older '60s tune by The Association, also called "Cherish." Madonna uses some of the words and the same notes from that song ("Cherish is the word I use to describe....", which was the key phrase from that '60s tune). But Madonna doesn't rip the Association off, rather she builds her own distinctive tune, but one clearly inspired by, and meant to be connected with, the earlier song by the Association. For people who really love this Madonna tune and want to appreciate it from a new perspective, pick up the Association's "Cherish" and compare the two. You will get a new appreciation of the genius of Madonna, one of the top two or three pop songwriters of the second half of the 20th century.

The B-side,
By Oliver (Denmark) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cherish / Supernatural (Audio CD)
This single is of cause the same as the original one. A great song we all know. But the "7 version is a bit different than the album version and the single also contains a "12 version. The B-side on this single "Supernatural" is a very good song and perhaps the main reason why you simply must own this cd. So if you don't have Supernatural, this is where you find it.

Worth it for the B-side!,

"Cherish" is one of those classic Maddy tunes, and this one satisfies with both the radio edit and an extended version. But for me this one is a must have for "Supernatural", a non-album track recorded with Patrick Leonard during the LIKE A PRAYER sessions. It's included on RED HOT AND DANCE, an AIDS benefit album from 1992, but in a different version. This one is just great, particularly if you're looking for something to spin round Halloween time. Whether the song's actually about a love affair with a ghost or just a metaphor for masturbation is up to you, either way it's fun piece that I've always loved.

The extended version of "Cherish" is nice, but if you've heard the album version then you've heard it all. "Supernatural" is a song in which Madonna sings about her lover...who happens to be a ghost. Hmmm. Definitely not her best lyrical work. Still a good addition to your CD singles collection, though, but if you're not a hardcore collector, go buy the "Like A Prayer" album.

A Must For Any Madonna Fan,
By "ebynoe" (Philadelphia, PA United States) - See all my reviews

Cherish is one of Madonna's best, and the first track on this is a wonderful variation of it. It's one of my favorite songs so I might have appreciated it more than someone who doesn't like it so much, but then there's Supernatural which is an even better reason to buy it. It's a cheeky, funky, kind of reggae-ish song. It's just wonderful. Maybe comparable to "Causing A Commotion", but much better. And if you happen to have the version of "Supernatural" on Red, Hot + Dance,(which is also excellent), don't hesitate to buy this one too, they really sound nothing alike.

I remember when this single came out, and I paid less for what they are asking at amazon.com...I bought it for the unrelease song SUPERNATURAL. . .The song is diffrent and sppoky and I like it because it made Madonna that she can do anything. It is a shame that there are only 3 track on the CD1- Cherish extended version 2- Cherish 7'' 3-supernatural which you can probably find else where for less than 5 dollar. The cassette only have 2 track 1-cherish 2- supernaturalalso you can find it for less I have both it is rediculious to have it on here as an import and for the price there are asking ...you can also find a remix of supernatural on the RED HOT DANCE CD for AIDS the remix is spooky with a touch of club dance beat...I suggest that you search for the cd with a resonable price before paying the $12.99 for it....I wish Madonna would release a CD with all her un release song cause some of her unrelease are actually good and it could of been hit. for example Your Honesty which was on remixes & revisit. . . .I don't mean to hurt amazon.com for the price they are charging for the CD of cherish and supernatural but i believe it is out rage ... sorry
