Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

ea. vol: 45p. illus. maps. photogs. reprods. glossary. index. (New True Bks.). CIP. Childrens. June 1985. PLB $7.95. Grade 2-4 Lepthien deftly sketches a concise overview of each tribe, clearly highlighting their history, peoples and culture. She matter-of-factly recounts white settlers' attitudes, actions of President Andrew Jackson and U.S. government policies which caused the continuing series of hardships and broken promises endured by Native Americans. Although simple in style and vocabulary, each book conveys a sense of outrage at the past, mixed with admiration of a proud people. Clear, well-chosen photographs and reproductions expand the texts. The Cherokee discusses Sequoyah, his syllabary and the infamous Trail of Tears. These subjects are covered elsewhere Only the Names Remain (Little, 1972) by Bealer is a grippingly sympathetic depiction of the Trail of Tearsbut not all in one book for such young readers. The Seminole fills a real void, as very little material on the Seminole Indian is available in any form for children. Good indexing and attractive format help insure that both titles will be welcome where study of American Indian tribes is part of the curriculum. Katharine Bruner, Brown Middle School Library, Harrison, Tenn.
