4.0 out of 5 stars Nice collection of prime 80s soul, where are the 12" mixes?
Don't get me wrong - if you don't own Cherrelle's out of print CDs like AFFAIR, this is a nice budget collection to complete your collection, but for true Cherrelle fans who already have all her CDs, why not go the extra mile and include a few of her 12" mixes? For example, the EXTENDED MIX of ARTIFICIAL HEART is amazing, chock full of the kind of studio sonics Jam &...

3.0 out of 5 stars some fun songs
I didn't know most of these songs before I got the CD, and I don't listen to them much. But the ones I do listen to are often on repeat.

For example, the EXTENDED MIX of ARTIFICIAL HEART is amazing, chock full of the kind of studio sonics Jam & Lewis whipped up later for Janet - and the HOUSE MIX of AFFAIR pumped in clubs on 12" but has never been released on CD. Too bad. That would have been nice. Still, with classic 80s soul cuts like EVERYTHING I MISS AT HOME and I DIDN'T MEAN TO TURN YOU ON, you really can't go wrong. Cherrelle deserved to be a much bigger crossover star, but alas that never quite happened. Savor this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars There ain't no justice!, February 27, 2007

Can someone please explain to me why a second rate singer like Madonna can be at the top of the tree when the real deal is still relatively unknown? I owned a few of Cherrelle's albums in the 1980s, "High Priority" and "Affair", were amongst the first CDs I ever owned, apart from the Harnoncourt recording of Handel's "Belshazzar" and Pinnock's Brandenburg Concerti.

Cherrelle's music was one of the soundtracks of my life - social and private - in the late 1980s. Cherrelle's creamy and sensuous voice was oft heard in my small flat (apartment) just off Toorak Road in South Yarra, Melbourne in 1987 to 1990.

Needless to say, many will know that Cherrelle's instrumental music was played, created and produced by those luminaries of the 1980s, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who were responsible for the production of the SOS Band, Alexander O'Neal, Janet Jackson's best album, "Control", The Human League's "Crash" album and several other groups. Jam and Lewis use that wonderful and wild invention of the 1980s, the polyphonic keyboard synthesizer, and, of course, that other amazing gizmo, the Roland TR 808 drum computer.

I always liked the way Jam and Lewis threw caution to the wind and actually played their keyboards on recordings, rather than sequencing everything. They seem to have been happy to leave everything in, even the occasional mistake! Their sounds are twangy and tangy and very smooth sounds and punctuated with stabs and rhythmical punches. Of course, many will compare their production values with those of Prince and that shouldn't surprise anyone, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were former members of the Time, one of the close peers and stable mates of His Purple Highness.

Cherrelle was a splendid performer and it is great to see some of her music available on CD again.

Cherrelle is another one of those artists that deserve to be on the forfront of the American Music Industry Icon List. She has the most incredible way of delivering a song that goes straight through all you built up walls and find itself land right straight into your heart. Cherrelles music has been the bluerint of my Life every since Fragile. I remember when she was first broadcated on national radio, I loved her then I lover her even more now. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are the only producers that I want to work with. They are brillient producer and songwriters. Cherrelle deserves to be on the Pop charts, R&B charts, Souls charts and not only that, how can artist like Britney Spears, and Lindsy Lohan, Madonna be Pop Icon when real artistslike Cherrelle fall by the wayside. Cherrelle, not only is a beautiful singer/songwriter she also has that vocal quality that makes she stand out in any crowd. This album is a wealth of strong vocals, catchy tunes and all of Cherrelles hits, full of flavor and savoir faire. Classic and welcomed edition to any collectors collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love her!!!, February 10, 2007
This review is from: Cherrelle Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I am a fan of all kinds of music, but the first time I heard her voice, I was impressed. For most of you that don't know, she is related to Pebbles. I love Saturday Love. She has an amazing voice, and she is incredibly gifted. I wish that she would have had more recognition than a lot of these other singers!!!!!!

As a longtime fan of Cherelle "I didn't meant to turn you on" and the classic "Saturday Love"(Alexander O'Neal) I have been searching for this CD - I have tapes and vinyl from the 80's but it's great to get a collection like this which I previously hadn't been able to find in the UK.

5.0 out of 5 stars To which I say....LONG OVERDUE! Her best songs here!, May 30, 2006
This review is from: Cherrelle Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I have spent years looking for Cherelle's albums. But I saw this recently and got it! Long overdue! Smartly compiles her best hits from her 1984, 1985 and 1988 albums and her duets with Alexander O'Neal. She sings with such good control over Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis' over the top production and music. Even her songs rival Janet Jackson's 1986 Control album hits in terms of quality. My favorites include Artificial Heart, I Didn't Mean To Turn You On (which Robert Palmer had a No.1 hit with), Affair, Saturday Love, Never Knew Love Like This, the funk-filled You Look Good to Me and others. They also include album cuts that were overlooked. Would have liked something from her 1991 album, but they decided to stick with the best. You need to have this album in your collection--she was a superb singer during that time in the '80s!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Cherelle's Best, June 2, 2006
This review is from: Cherrelle Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I have not bought this CD yet but I do have all of cherrelle's hits but now I can just pop this CD in when it is shipped to me. I too wish there was something from "the woman I am" CD but that was not TABU records but I do understand. Music like this comes and stays. I even remember I heard I didn't mean to turn you on, watching the video. It has been nothing but love for Cherrelle every since.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost R & B Star Shines!, January 19, 2008

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cherrelle Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
To be honest, I've heard Cherrelle's stuff before but I didn't realize who it was. What made me purchase this CD was the song "Saturday Love" which I originally thought was Janet Jackson's song for years until I saw it on this CD!

I also wasn't aware that "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" was Cherrelle's and not Robert Plant's song! No disrespect to Mr. Plant's version (which is a classic in its own right) but I am glad to hear Cherrelle's.

The CD as a whole is a good example of how R & B music used to be. You still have a few examples of that today such as Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, Babyface, Maxwell, Raphael Saadiq, Joss Stone and Chrisette Michele that carry on traditions that guys like The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Manhattans, Tammie Terrell, Marvin Gaye, Barry White, Luther Vandross, The Isley Brothers, Shalamar and (of course) Cherrelle began.

If you were a fan of her's but don't have the money to get her CD's individually or just want to hear her best, then this is a good place to start. Very good CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars You Know Her Songs, But Now You Can Know Who Sings Them, January 16, 2008
This review is from: Cherrelle Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
It seems many people know at least one or two of Cherrelle's songs, but few know who the artist is that sings them. I believe this is the best compilation of the songs most know, but few know they are Cherrelle's. I was very happy to receive this requested CD for a Xmas gift, and finally have all of my favorite Cherrelle songs.
