5.0 out of 5 stars This is the Eve's Plum CD to get
I had 'Envy' for a long time and liked it, but this one is way better. Unlike 'Envy', the songs don't tend to drag on a bit longer than they should. I like every song on it but particularly 'Fairy Princess', 'Lipstuck', and 'Beautiful'.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as what Vitamin C has to offer....
I was actually exposed to Vitamin C [Colleen Fitzpatrick, Eve's Plum's lead vocalist] before Eve's Plum. In fact, I only listened to this because I heard she was part of this band before she started her solo career. And quite frankly, I was disappointed. Her solo stuff is so much better. This is annoying, repetitive, blaring garage rock, not nearly as catchy as Vitamin...

A much more sunnier, happier release than the previous "Envy", Cherry Alive was another album that should have been big when alternative music was in it's heyday. Cherry Alive is a celebration of silly teen crushes backed by rousing guitar work and snappy arrangements. Coleen Fitzpatrick's wispy, sexy vocals help one recall every particular girl you have ever had a crush on, singing the lyrics to your favorite love song, directly to you, in your adolescent fantasies. Given the song titles such as "Cherry Alive", "I Want You Bad" and lyrics such as "I'll bring you to your knees" only adds fuel to the erotic fire. Check out "Jesus Loves You(But not as much as I do!) "Someone to tell Me I'm Wrong" and "Serious Stuff" as standout tracks, although every song has value. If this is available new or used on Amazon, buy it now! It is a steal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ahead of their time..., April 3, 2007
This review is from: Cherry Alive (Audio CD)
I think Colleen and Co. were ahead of their time with their group, I love this album- it's now one of my favorite cds (which yes I still listen to both the Vitamin C cds- they're very fun and catchy). I think had they been a new band on today's scene they would have gotten perhaps a bit more attention- they have some pop, rock, new wave, alt all mixed in together and actually with the way she does her lyrics and what have you she sorta reminds me of Eve 6 with their catchy beats and words. No matter what anyone else thinks I've always rooted for Colleen/Vitamin C and I'm so glad to have found this album.

This Eve's Plum CD features their classic, "Jesus Loves You (Not As Much As I Do)." The rest of the CD doesn't disappoint, either.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pillar of power pop, April 28, 2010
This review is from: Cherry Alive (Audio CD)
It seems fitting that I should go directly from reviewing Nick Gilder's 1978 power-pop classic 'City Nights' to this album, which is most assuredly cut from the same cloth. While Eve's Plum has always seemed a bit pre-fab for comfort (and singer Colleen Fitzpatrick's subsequent re-emergence as the dance-pop singer "Vitamin C" in order to capitalize on the post-Spice Girls fad for such things did nothing to dispel the suspicions), this one album, the major-label debut and swansong of Eve's Plum, is a towering achievement in one of rock's most neglected sub-genres: the crunchy guitars and shameless pop hooks of power pop. But, it's a noble tradition, spanning the glam pop of T.Rex and continuing through Cheap Trick, Joan Jett, the Sweet, Bram Tchaikovsky, Todd Rundgren's Utopia, the Rubinoos and countless others. 'Cherry Alive', despite being out-of-print and languishing in obscurity since the day it was released back in 1995, stands proudly in that company. And Fitzpatrick's bad grrrl persona now makes the album seem way ahead of its time, coming (as it did) nearly a decade before the popularity of Avril Lavigne and Paramore. Excuse me while I dust off my air guitar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bed Bath and Beyond the Time Barrier, January 8, 2009

Eve's Plum. I originally became familliar with them via their big hit "I Want it All" off their first album Envy. But I originally found this disc in a thrift store for a dollar and bought it just for a lark. (Wans't in the best condition hence my ordering it here) But then I played it and fell in love. From the first few bars of track one you could tell they were kind of starting to hit their stride and establish themselves as an entity. Another band that was underrated and went out of business before their time. Well on the upside they did stay together a while. 91-98. This album has a great cover version of Loved by You. They totally make it their own and Colleen Fitzpatrick's voice in this version I must say is quite arousing. This is a must have and a keeper. Trivia: Colleen Fitzpatrick went on to become Pop Singer Vitamin C.

4.0 out of 5 stars A stellar effort from one of the best bands to emerge from the 90's, August 13, 2006

This review is from: Cherry Alive (Audio CD)
While this album was not as good as Eve's Plum's first CD "Envy", this was a great follow up. The music changed quite a bit from Envy (not quite as angry) but their single "Jesus Loves You" with it's extremley strange video hooked me and I wanted to support one of my favorite bands. The opening track "Jesus loves you" was a stellar opening followed by the pop sounding "Wishing the day away" takes on an interesting journey with the amazing vocals of Colleen Fitzpatrick. The track "Lipstuck" is great fun but "Fairy Princess" is the stand out track of the album. A absolute must for Eve's Plum fans and music lovers. Colleen went on to become Vitamin C and most Eve's Plum fans will not get into her solo stuff (Think Britney Spears). Colleen's finest work was easily Eve's Plum and they were the best band to emerge from the 1990's. Yes Colleen I still have a crush on you ;)

Envy, this band's first record, was unjustly overlooked by the public. With a little more of a marketing push behind it, the band released this album, which smoothed out the rougher edges of the band's sound and songwriting, making for a more radio-friendly, but less gutsy record.

Cherry Alive is still highly listenable punk-pop, with the madcap riffing and speedy tempo of leadoff track "Jesus Loves You" stating the album's intent immediately. "Loved by You" and "Wishing the Day Away" maintains the wry yet sweet tone of previous songs like "Once Twice", but the best track is "Fairy Princess", a hooky, instantly lovable track contrasting airy, Nirvana-esque guitar arpeggios with grinding electric guitars. Colleen Fitzpatrick's vocal harmonies on this song rival the best '90s alt-rock vocal duos like Veruca Salt. "Want You Bad", however, sounds like the kind of simplistic, lyrically clumsy punk song this band used to be very good at avoiding.

A very appealing record from the '90s, but not quite the instant classic of the band's debut. Still, I'd take Cherry Alive any day over any song by Fitzpatrick's next musical incarnation, as dance diva Vitamin C.
