Book Description

March 1, 1996 Crime, Penguin
Scotland Yard's Perry Trethowan never wanted to make the trip to Norway for the World Association of Romantic Novelists convention. But it was hard saying no to his newly published sister, Christobel. And besides, the worst he expected was the chilly Scandanavian weather and a harmless if irritating menu of fanciful writers and flowery language. Who could've known that backbiting, malice, and bitter rivalry were the true customs of this convention and that the plot line would soon include murder? Amanda Fairchild, the genre's amorous doyenne, ends up dead while en route to a fjord - side tryst of her own, and the dauntless Trethowan must discover which of these authors has turned the page from romance to homicide.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The many fans of Scotland Yard's Perry Trethowan will savor his adventures in this 15th elegantly satiric mystery by Barnard. This time around Perry is escorting his timid sister Christobel to a meeting of romance writers in Norway. Flaunting her fame, Amanda Fairchild (nee Maureen Jane Shottery) stands out in the company of authors for Bills and Coo and other publishers from around the world. But the real queen present is Lorelei Zuckerman, who signs her runaway bestsellers "le Neve." Lorelei remains aloof from the gathering, waited on slavishly by a cowed employee, Felicity Maxwell. These two have a perfect alibi on the night when Perry finds Amanda drowned in a pool beside a cherry tree (a jibe at the victim's Hearts in Cherry Blossom Time, but the inspector includes them in his list of suspects to be carefully scrutinized. In the denouement, a shockingly inhuman plot is disclosed. Barnard's wit is as sharp as ever; depictions of Norwegian scenic splendors and food are extra attractions.

Good murder mystery, but not great. Perry Trethowan is, unfortunately, at a romance writer's convention to help his sister over her shyness. As it were, while he, the Scotland Yard investigator is prowling around the grounds, he hears a scream which is his sister and finds the body of Amanda Fairchild, one of the genre's premier writers (or is she?). Not a terribly surprising finish to the book, but still satisfying.
