Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

At the start of Konrath's brisk and breezy sixth Jack Daniels mystery, the guilt-ridden Chicago cop, who's attending the funeral of a loved one, takes a call from Alexandra Kork, the sadistic psychopath who did in the loved one at the end of 2008's Fuzzy Navel (I checked the Weather Channel.... It's raining in Chicago. That's appropriate, don't you think? Funerals on sunny days seem so wrong). Barred from the official hunt for Kork because she's personally involved in the case, Daniels soon finds herself on the wrong side of the law with few of the usual resources to call on. Meanwhile, the wily Kork, who's stopped counting her victims (after 50 they blur), strews bodies over a wide area as part of a scheme to lead Daniels to a slow and painful death. Konrath leavens the violence with offbeat humor, including a feces-throwing monkey in love with a cashmere sweater. The slam-bang ending is sure to satisfy series fans. (July)

From the Author

Cherry Bomb is the sixth book in the Jack Daniels series.

I often get asked by readers what order the Jack Daniels books should be read in.

I purposely write each book so it can be read without any prior knowledge of any of the others. If you want to start on the last book and work backwards, or start in the middle, you can still enjoy the series without missing anything.

That said, some readers do want a chronological list of events in Jack's life. So here it is.

Besides the eight Jack Daniels novels, Jack and her cohorts have appeared as supporting characters in several other books and stories. Here's the order, from her years as a rookie cop, to the future.

SHOT OF TEQUILA by JA Konrath
SERIAL KILLERS UNCUT by JA Konrath and Blake Crouch
WHISKEY SOUR by JA Konrath

I am so disappointed with this book. I loved this series when it started. It was funny, well-written, great plots and the characters were believable. Then it degenerated. Fuzzy Navel was bad, but this was worse. I only wish Konrath had stopped before he wrote these last two, as it just ruined the whole series. Who were these people? They certainly weren't the folks that I had come to know and love from the previous books. They didn't grow, they regressed. Change from growth is not a bad thing, but that wasn't the case here. No humor, just non-stop sex, death and gore. What was the point? Just as well this was the last one. It's just a pity to go out this way.

I enjoyed Bloody Mary so I thought that I had found a series that would revolve around a female protagonist and an interesting cast of characters, solving murders that would not have too much sex and violence. (Bloody Mary actually mentioned that a lot would happen "off camera.") I have read and enjoyed many other such series (Grafton, Evanovich, etc.) that change the plot but not the tone of the series. Therefore I did not expect to find graphic violence early on in Cherry Bomb. It is as if the characters were hijacked by another author or series. Yuck. I won't be finishing this book and will not attempt to try out the other books in the series because I don't know what to expect, the "fun" of Bloody Mary or the "yuck" of Cherry Bomb.

I've been reading this series since it started with Whiskey Sour and couldn't stop raving about it. I was eagerly anticipating this book since Fuzzy Navels heart stopping, cliff hanger of an ending. The past books had enough humor and irreverence to make up for all the horror. They were wonderful police procedural's as well as mysteries. The reason why I gave this book such a low rating is that I know that JA Konrath could have done so much better. After all, as I said, he managed to hook me into this series with his other books. So had he made more of an effort to keep our adrenaline jacked with more than just a series of random killings that did nothing to move the plot along I may have been a little less harsh in my review.

But this offering is nothing but non-stop gratuitous murder, yes we get the fact that Kork is a nut case and this is her reason for living, but a break would have been nice, there is no humor and the fact that Jack would have had sex so soon (I would explain why this is disturbing to me, but it would mean adding something that would spoil the book for those who haven't read it yet) doesn't ring true and only goes to show that men authors may not really want to write books from a woman's POV.

Too much of this book forces me to suspend disbelief to the point that I may as well have been reading a paranormal. The characters have not developed any farther than they had in the last book and in that one they hadn't changed one iota from the previous books, and the added character in the way of a monkey that throws his feces at everyone is well, maybe it's something a teenage boy would find hilarious, I didn't.

I recommend that if you must read this because you have a compulsive need to keep up with a series, then wait and buy it in paper back. I'm sorry that I got it in hard cover and didn't buy it for my Kindle. At least I wouldn't feel so cheated.

"Cherry Bomb" is the sixth in the Lieutenant Jack Daniels' series. I've loved all the previous books and I loved this one.

All the regular cast of characters (minus one - the book starts with a sad funeral to let us readers know who didn't make it from the cliffhanger at the end of Fuzzy Navel) make their appearance in this laugh-a-minute, cringe-a-minute extravaganza.

The magical Chevy Nova (that has been a 1984, '85, '86 and '88 in the series); bombs; the Crimabago; a demon monkey; brotherly love; friendly lust - and back again - Alex Kork, deadly female serial killer who really does NOT like Jack or her friends and family.

If you like fast-paced action with blood, guts, and sex all rolled together with laughs and giggles, try out this series.

I have read Jack Daniels series before this. This one just does not rise up. Jack sleeps with a drug addict, wanted bank robber the day after her Fiance funeral. She is doing this as Alex Kork the serial killer is killing dozens of people. I have read Rogue cop books, we have seen the movies it all kinda makes sense in the end, even if wrong. This is TOTALLY wrong. Yes I know Alex killed her Fiance, but so many people are being killed every day while she looks for her. Jack would have found Alex much sooner, had she worked with the police. I found it completely selfish. Her ex husband gets killed in the process. I found the attitude of Harry not even remotely reasonable or believable, just an insult to readers. Of course During all this Jack is sleeping with Phin who is driving a stolen car AND snorting cocaine. Yes he is Sexy and cares about her. Don't forget she just came from her fiance funeral. We have lots if detail about many of the slaughters Alex is killing peeling skin, burning lots and lots of fine detail of Alex torturing the victims. Too Much. Truthfully everything about this book is just wrong.!
