5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Bookcase
I needed a book case, relatively narrow to use in my closet for holding shoes in plastic boxes. I looked all over the internet and found this bookcase to be the best for price and now that I have it, I see just how sturdy it is. Cherry Finish 6 SHELF BOOKCASE

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointed
Incredibly disappointed. Product supposedly marked down from $300, but I have bought better bookcases for much less. I at least expected for this price and based on the products picture, that the back of the bookcase was wood, not just thin plastic veneer. Plus the fact that the assembly directions are not great, leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Future buyers beware! My...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff, May 3, 2009

I've yet to get a negative comment on this. I recently purchased a house and two of these for the small library of books I have (both are 95%+ full). I was impressed by the actual quality of this, as were other members of my family. They look a lot more expensive than they really are and are sturdier than they may need to be. Assembly is easy as well. Not sure I would necessarily use them as my "best" shelves, but they are good for if you want to make a library for your house and want to do it inexpensively.

There is no way that this bookcase's original price was $402.56. It's not even real wood; it's that "pressed board" thing. Sometimes on amazon you really do find impossible-to-believe deals, but in this case, you get what you pay for. The item's value is misrepresented.

It took me 4 1/2 hours to assemble it. I am a single woman who has assembled only a bench -- which required only an allen wrench (provided!) -- and a console table. I have no tools other than a four-way screwdriver. I think that it could be assembled in about 80 or 90 or 100 minutes by a man who has assembled furniture before and who has a decent tool collection. Assembly instructions, although in diagrams only, are fairly clear.

Now that it is assembled and in place, I will say that it looks nice enough. For a graduate student's apartment. I have yet to unpack my boxes full of books and test the strength of the shelves, though. I think and I hope that they will prove sturdy enough.

In truth, I enjoyed spending the 4 1/2 hours putting this thing together, because I learned that I can do it! I can assemble furniture by myself.

Finally, there were no items missing. Everything that was supposed to be included was included. And again, I did it with nothing but a 4-way screwdriver.

4.0 out of 5 stars 24" wide cherry bookcase, January 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cherry Finish 6 Shelf Bookcase
I purchased this unit because it was the most affordable 24" wide unit I could find. I needed the 24" width due to space limitations and I wanted something that wasn't just plain black. This fit the bill. It is fairly simple to put together, after all, it is just a bookcase. I think the hardest part was dealing with the two piece back panel. I was wondering why they couldn't just make it one piece with a fold down the middle. Other units I have purchased in the past did it this way. It would eliminate the fussiness of having to assemble the center plastic strip which is annoying but, not insurmountable.

I bought it to hold several years worth of magazines in one locatation. The only drawback is that when I adjust the moveable shelves to the height that works for the space below then the space above the shelf isn't quite tall enough to stand the magazines up on end so they will have to lay flat on those shelves. Not ideal but, it still works. Otherwise, it is a decent shelf that was shipped very quickly and arrived in excellent shape. It was double boxed to avoid shipping damage. This turned out to be a very good idea as the unit is pretty heavy and the outer box showed signs of being manhandled during shipping. I am sure it was due to the size and weight and those package guys have to move pretty quickly to meet their schedules. The communication from the shipper was excellent and the whole transaction went well. I would buy from this seller again if I need another item they carry.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for one person to put together, January 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cherry Finish 6 Shelf Bookcase
This bookcase, when put together, is 24 inches wide. Apparently to make the packing smaller, the back consists of two 12-inch strips with a plastic strip to hold them together. It's nearly impossible for one person to get the two pieces together, insert them into the plastic strip, get them in place against the body of the bookcase, glue them down, and get the screws in. While a person is working on one side, the other is jarred out of place. The bookcase is up, but it's not a good job on the back.

If you plan to buy one, make sure you have a friend available to help with the construction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice looking piece of furniture, May 22, 2009

It's a bit narrower than I expected, but very nice looking. It turned out to be the perfect size for my son's VHS and DVD collection. I'll probably buy another one to get more shelf space.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall, very satisfied..., November 26, 2010

I really love this bookshelf for what I needed. It was not difficult to put together, but I would recommend a power screwdriver. It fits perfect in the spot that I had in mind. My only complaint is that there were not enough of the shelf supports that holds the shelves in place. I will have get more from a hardware store. I need another three to add to the one I have left to support the fourth of four shelves.

For the money and for what I needed it for it was a good purchase.

Yes, this bookcase is quite sturdy and reasonably attractive. There are little plastic disks on the side that cover the screw heads, but they are color-matched so don't look bad. Every other shelf is fixed and the others are adjustable. The finish is a dark color with a bit of a reddish tinge It's more what I would describe as rosewood rather than cherry. It does not match my other real cherry furniture at all. It came very thoroughly packed, everything was included. The assembly was simple but involved a lot of screwing. 20 long screws to attach the fixed shelves and maybe 30 smaller screws to attach the back. I can see where it might take a long time with a manual screwdriver. Part way through I realized I had a screwdriver attachment for my electric drill and that made a huge difference. It's a good fit for a narrow space, but be sure to check the height, as it is quite tall and won't fit in rooms where eaves lower the ceiling height.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy and easy to assemble., July 26, 2010

It is sturdy enough. Though it is supposed to be fixed to the wall, you don't need to do so. I was a little worried because its width is only 24 inches, compared with 30 inches of my other bookcases, but this one is sturdier than my 30-inch bookcases.

It is a large bookcase, so it takes hours to assemble this. But it's not really hard to assemble. You can make it without electric drivers.
