This CD took a few listens to really appreciate but now I am again finding myself humming certain songs all day long as I did with earlier CDs. Skip's voice in the song "It's Your Love" and the harmonizing is Cherryholmes at its best. Molly's sassy "Live It" is a very catchy tune. I feel I too quickly put a negative feed back on here at first and am doing a complete turn about. This is a great CD and continues to show the talent of this family. A 5 star!

I was lucky enough to discover the Cherryholmes quite recently when they played a concert in Phx. I had never heard of them and went in with a completely open mind and no expectations. Several of the songs from the cd were a part of the concert. I loved watching and listening to them perform that night...and love listening to them now. I put this cd into my car and have played it repeatedly for several weeks now.
Their talents as musicians are quite amazing and listening to this cd will show anyone how very talented this entire family is. I think their harmonies both musically and vocally are incredible and look forward to seeing how they continue to grow in the future. The daughters vocals are quite pure and I would love to see them highlighted on their own cds. My favorite song is "weaver of lies" for the vocals, and "Tattoo of a smudge" for the amazing sounds of the instrumentals. If you don't come away tapping your feet after this Cd...then you have no love of music! ~smile~

I have to agree with an earlier comment that this takes a few listens to really appreciate how great this cd is. Then I found I could not stop playing it, my favourite is still Cherryholmes III Don't Believe, as that contains Broken and its reprise which is the best track Cherryholmes have recorded..... so far. My very minor gripes are that some vocals seem slightly strained and the lyrics of some could be better. Having only one instrumental "Tattoo of a Smudge" considering their previous standouts: "Coastline", "Nine Yards" and "Sumatra" is a loss, but it is another classic. Cia has such talent as a singer and writer her compositions are always quality. "Weaver of Lies" is exceptional. I also love Mollys' "Live It" and "I am your conscience". Unfare not to mention the great mandolin and Guitar of BJ and Skip, this is a group effort though and its a another classy addition, roll on V. Musically this group are brave in progressing without being stuck in a time capsule which no doubt purists would like them to be.
I have been fortunate to see Cherryholmes live on 3 occassions in Scotland and they are simply superb as are each of their cds. A great band playing great music.

I love this CD. It has a very nice mixture of fast bluegrass songs and slower bluegrass ballads, The sound quality is excellent and I just like this CD, The creativity flows, and the instruments are great.
The cover is neat artwork and says alot about the album. It shows slices of pics of each band member and I think that the CD does that too. I mean when Molly or Sandy sing,it is a different experience. There is some pop sounding songs in the mix, but that's ok, pop sells CDs, I hear some jazz/swing influences too. Maybe a bit overproduced, but I like it, There is a great gospel song that is great. One of their best!!!

This is one incredibly talented family. They are amazing instrumentalists. And Oh Boy do they play fast.
That said, they are not song-writers. Their songs sound as if someone sat down and just started copying out of a novel. The words just kind of run on without any rhyme, and you don't care what they are singing about. The singing voices are only average, and the son should not be a featured singer at all. This is the third Cherryholmes album that I've bought. Black and white is a very good album, and the song "Black and white" is one of favorite songs. If Cherryholmes were to not do all their own songs. Maybe shop for some good ones, and remake some traditionals, I believe that they could make a much better album. The instrumental talent of this group is amazing, but their writing leaves a lot to be desired.

I have been a fan of Cherryholmes since I stumbled across them at a bluegrass festival in Northern California. Their vocals and exceptional musicality blew me away, and I have bought all of their CDs ever since.
On first listen, I was slightly underwhelmed. Anyone who has heard their music knows that their Achilles' heel is songwriting, and the same is mostly true with this album (notable exceptions are "When It's Not With Me Everyday" and "Weaver of Lies"). That being said, their vocals and musical arrangements just get better and better with each album. All of Cia's songs are great ("Just You" especially), and Molly's voice has really developed into something great as well- her phrasing in "Live It" comes to mind. I also found as I listened to it multiple times that I was very impressed with the fact that now, even more than ever, these people can flat out play. The strings section in "It's Your Love" is phenomenal, reminding me of "Broken" from their previous album (one of my favorite songs of theirs). "Weaver of Lies" has a very unique arrangment, and "Tattoo of a Smudge" is a frenzy of excitement. Bottom line: give it a chance, and this album will win you over. My only complaint is that the songwriting can tend to be a bit trite.

Un Common Thread,

I was very disappointed in the latest offering by what I know to be a great band. I have tried to listen to it several times but always end up ejecting it. Not much lively here. Not up to their usual standard.
