I now look for errors when I go to coin shows to ad to my collection in the common everyday offerings that everyone can pick up for very little.

Cherrypicker's Guide to Rare Die Varieties of United States Coins isn't for novices: it tells avid collectors how to cherrypick rare coins, culling a collection of normal coins for the rare characteristics and issues that make for unique acquisitions. This 4th updated edition represents the 2nd volume: it covers half dimes to modern dollars, gold, commemoratives, and packs in the black and white photo close-ups of marks and dies which make identification of smaller marks a snap. Reviews of collector holdings, varieties of coins, and discussions and arguments within the collecting community over the cause of marks enhance a lay-flat binding with spine lettering perfect for frequent consultation or library shelving. A top pick.

I have about worn out vol one waiting for vol 2 to show up but the wait was worth it. Great pictures and the new format is better and more useable. Every true collector of US coins, needs this book sitting on their desk. Thank you gentlemen.

This is a followup to volume 1 of the Cherrypickers guide. It includes many newer items such as the two varieties of the Wisconsin 2004-D quarters that sell for a three figure sum. The varieties listed are coins that might be found in circulation. This volume covers coins from 10 cents and up. Volume 1 handled the lesser face value coins. The downside to this reference is that a microscope is required to find many of its "cherrypicked" coins. It is, however, a useful reference for the more advanced coin collector.

This is the Bible for anyone who collects coins. Look at your coins carefully. You never know when you'll find a coin that has a Wonderful Mint Error. I've found several mint errors in my collection, a couple of which I had varified. Unfortunately nothing really glaring, but did raise the value of a few enough to keep me looking. I haven't looked at 1/3 of my collection. You coin collectors need to have this book.

Nice looking guide. While not new to coin collecting, I am new at finding mint errors. Very informative on double die versus double strike varieties. Detailed pictures on what to look for. Guide includes rarity ratings, 'sell-ability' ratings and more.

I didn't read the description close enough to realize it does not include pennies, nickles, etc., but thats my problem. I will be looking around for volume I though.

Error and variety collecting is a relatively new form of collecting. Since the discovery of the 1955 Lincoln Cent Double Die Obverse, collectors have been looking at coins differently. From double dies, repunched mint marks, and off-center strikes to difference in die varieties for the same series--even within the same year--the hobby of error collecting can be as satisfying and profitable.

While other books can discuss the profitability, the Cherrypickers' Guide teaches what to look for. With fantastic illustrations and a solid, usable binding, experts Bill Fivaz and J.T. Stanton show collectors what to look for while looking for errors and varieties. The book covers nearly every series of coins including dollars, commemorative, gold.

One caveat I will give is that those who are interested in varieties of Morgan and Peace Dollars, you may want to also buy Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars. This book is out of print, but some Amazon Marketplace sellers do have copies.

Happy Hunting!

If you are like me, you have been in the hobby for a long time and think you know a lot about things only to discover that you were only scratching the surface. This book provides interesting information that will help you make wiser buying choices and perhaps make a few more dollars when selling coins. It was well written and provides good quality pictures but the prices are not completely accurate with regards to silver and gold as the market fluxuates greatly for the errors with marginal increeses over standard values. I discovered VAMs when I didn't think I had any as well as some other finds. I now look for errors when I go to coin shows to ad to my collection in the common everyday offerings that everyone can pick up for very little. Get the book and read it. You will discover that you can locate valuable items for little out of your pocket if you just take the time to learn and look for characteristics that were previously unknown to you. Knowledge is power and quite often profit!

I have had this about a month, and have used it extensively for 20th century silver issues. Just learning the angles of identifying doubles, recut dies, repunched mint marks, etc. makes this book worth it. I found some sections of no use - such as the extremely rare coins (gold, seated dollars) but the 20th century silver (Dimes, Quarters and Halves) very interesting and enlightening as well as the section on Morgan dollars. If you have a few rolls of Washington Quarters or Mercury Dimes (even circulated) you can probably pay for this book by just going through them for varieties.
