Suffering from Kurt Wallander withdrawal - having ripped through all the Henning Mankell series featuring that estimable police detective this winter - I picked up Dark Harbor, which had been available at the office of the yacht broker we haunt on Maryland's Eastern Shore, hoping to find a sailboat we can afford. (Thank you, Lou, for talking it up to us!) It is terrific! I am a little more than halfway through, thoroughly hooked, and while both Nora and Van can be annoying at times, I find them compelling characters; and the plotting, settings, and character development are wonderfully well-done. I just visited Vivian's website and am delighted to see that she (with her co-author?) have a sequel in the works. She sounds like my kind of person, too, and I look forwarding to perhaps meeting her some day wandering around our beloved Chesapeake Bay. Thank you, Vivian and Lawrence for writing an absorbing and nuanced mystery, and please keep them coming!

Vivian Lawry and Lawrence Gulick have given veteran mystery readers a real challenge. I’ve often take pride in sorting out the “might have done its” from the “couldn’t have done its,” narrowing the former down to one or two. However, in this case, nearly every character, even the nice ones, had a believable motive and opportunity to murder the despicable victim. Combine this with lively writing and a cast of fully fleshed-out characters, add realistically drawn academic and nautical settings, and the result is a story that will grip you from the first page to the last. I couldn’t wait to dive into the second book in this series, “Tiger Heart.” Hopefully, there with be more to come.

Dark Harbor is a very good mystery, but make sure you have time when you pick it up to start reading. You will not be able to put it down once you start! I am hoping there will be more books with Nora and Van in them.
